End of duty-free imports from China to USA

The purpose of this message is to provide guidance on the additional duties on imports that are the products of China, pursuant to the Executive Order issued on February 1, 2025 (EO). As directed by the EO, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) issued a Notice in the Federal Register implementing the additional duties. As explained in the Federal Register Notice, for purposes of the additional duties imposed by the EO, articles that are the product of China, include products of Hong Kong in accordance with Executive Order 13936 on Hong Kong Normalization. See the Federal Register Notice and 85 FR 43413 (July 17, 2020).

As directed by the EO, the additional duties imposed on imports that are the products of China, including products of Hong Kong, will be assessed on covered imports regardless of value, and shipments containing such merchandise are no longer eligible for the “de minimis” administrative exemption from duty and certain tax at 19 U.S.C. § 1321(a)(2)(C).

Previously those of us in the US have been spoiled; imported goods from China have been exempt from import duties if they were less than $800 in value. I had gotten used to breaking up my large PCB orders to make sure each one is below $800, since the 25% duty always ended up costing more than the difference in an extra shipment. Apparently as of February 4th, all shipments from China will be subject to import duties regardless of value. I've been trying not to raise prices on anything I sell, but a cost increase of 25% is tough to swallow.

I'm just now looking to start doing runs of my own pedals. I have a pedal being play tested right now that I'm planning to release in two or three months. It's a rough time to be trying to take that next step, even rougher for those of you who already are established and have a lot more invested.

Is OSH park that much more expensive?
Short answer, yes. More expensive, fewer options, slower, and no services like assembly. OSH park is not actually a manufacturer, they're more like a broker that combines orders into batches and farms them out to a number of factories. They limit the options available in order to make orders uniform so it can all go on one panel.

There are US manufacturers that offer the services I've been getting from China, including one 30 minutes from my house, but the quotes I've gotten have been 5-6x the price and somehow still anywhere from double to ten times the lead time I get from China.

Damn. Didn’t realize there was that much of a disparity.

was a general 10% on everything...China was hit with a higher rate. Canada and Mexico while hit with similar have also pointed out FOOD would be cut off and Canuckleville can turn the power off to the north east.

The shipping suspension is over at the time of writing this.

Effective February 5, 2025, the Postal Service will continue accepting all international inbound mail and packages from China and Hong Kong Posts. The USPS and Customs and Border Protection are working closely together to implement an efficient collection mechanism for the new China tariffs to ensure the least disruption to package delivery.

I would imagine a middle ground on the de minimis issue will be found. Otherwise, China/HK will just start drop shipping to a different 'origin' country.

I have an incoming shipment that was "Processed for clearance" yesterday... normally that means it would be delivered today.

This morning I see that it still hasn't left that sort facility and is experiencing a "Clearance Event" ....

Just send me my bill and let's get on with it. 😭

Not going to pour on top of this, but Mouser has already started adding in tariffs on certain parts. I had a small order and a third of the cost was shipping (duh) but the tariff cost too.
