Questions about Effects Layouts

Somehow or another I was unaware of Effects Layouts PCBs until very recently. I have just a couple of questions regarding their PCBs.

1. Are they any that you would recommend specifically for a bass player? Any projects you've done of theirs that you really liked the results of? I've looked through their catalogue and there's a ton of intriguing projects there. I'm just having a hard time narrowing it down to a few that I want to try.

2. I have heard good things about the Schwarz. Unfortunately I cannot find this for sale on their website any more. Does anyone happen to know why? I tried reaching out to them on Instagram a couple of weeks ago but haven't heard back. Alternatively, does anyone have an extra Schwarz PCB they would be interested in getting rid of?

A bunch, here are a few that are only found there that I enjoy on the bass:
Widowgast (muff)
Pepperbox (rat)
Grizzled Grime (ocd)
Hot Bod (yats?)

Spotted Dick gets a mention here because every bass oriented builder should build one but the prunes and custard is now available at ppcb as the Curds n Whey. The DAM Ezekiel is great and available elsewhere but the Great Vengeance is the smallest pcb for it that I'm aware of. I also have had a Jocelyn Bell and Liliput in build queue limbo for a long long time.

I've used the EF120 for distorted bass tones on this one project and it worked great for that project, but do note that I'm not a bassist and don't really know much about bass. Just a guitarist playing bass, if you will.

Also the project has two basses and no guitars, so the tones are maybe a bit burlier than you would normally use.

I can assure that the tones are not more burly than I would normally use! Very often when considering a preamp/OD/distortion build I ask the question, "Will it doom?!" If the answer is no, I probably won't build it. However I might be concerned about losing too many low end frequencies.

Actually now that you mention it I'm not 100% sure if I did a multiple track thing with a split clean low end or not. But the EF120 lets through quite a bit of low end with 100n coupling caps and a selectable input cap (which goes up to 100nF) behind the "Depth" switch (well, not quite input cap, but after the first gain stage I guess - input cap is 100n too).

I have built 3 of Effects Layouts pedals with no problems other than me making a mistake :)

I have another one on deck.

Noticed their Supercollider board is gone as well. Couldn't it be a case of them only selling old stock, and waiting for how the tariff things plays out? To me Effect Layouts seem to be more of a side hobby and less of a company than PPCB / AION, and money? That's how it looks to me.

I've also built two others that worked fine, just not bass related really. I've also got like... six boards on the waiting list.

Yep, very difficult to narrow it down, especially when you've not given us a clue about your proclivities — are you after mild dirt, fuzz, modulation? Do you use delay or reverb with your bass? Are you looking for a preamp with DI capabilities?

There's a number of cool utility builds you could do, too.

Some great suggestions already, but there's plenty more besides...

BARRANCA — YATS based on EQD's Palisades (minus boost); mod it for better bass response
BASSIFRASS — Frantone Bassweet
CHAOS BOLT — Dwarfcraft Eau Claire Thunder (MUFF)
CITRUS PRESS — Orange Squeezer with a dry-blend
CRANKY SPEAKER — EQD Speaker Cranker which you can easy-peasy build a Southampton Fifth Gear on.
FEDERALIST — Dist+ & Muff
FOOTSWITCH DI2 — a utility build to add a DI to whatever other circuit you want to pair it with
HORDE-HOWLER — Fulltone Bass Drive
ILLITHID — Dunwich Cthulhu Si/Ge/MOS
INTER CONTINENTAL — EHX BMPOA
JOCELYN BELL — EHX Pulsar tremolo
KENTAURIDE — TS10 Tube Screamer and a silver Klon Centaur; there are good mods out there for bassifying the TS10, and Chuck D Bones excellent mods will make the Centaur positively bombasstic!
KOSSACK Козак (Cossack) — another Klone. Again, Chuck's Bass Mods turn any Klone into a bass blasteroid.
LAWN DARTS — EQD Arrows (nee Electra), swap out C1 for 1µ or 2µ2 as well as up to 470n for C3 and BOOM!
LIFESTYLE — fantastic phaser by CultureJam that can go super fast for in your face phasing/pseudo ring-mod or go super-slow for some subtle je ne c'est quoi flavours.
LILLIPUT — SmallSound/BigSound MINI — once upon a time a highly sought after circuit by the TB punters, can't wait to build mine.
MENHIR — another must-build, based on MountainKing's Megalith
PRISMATIC EQ — Boss GE-7B, but note there's a mistake in the build doc — C14 is NOT 3n9 for bass, rather it should be 5n6.
RED CLAY OD — dip your toes into SMD with this YATS, it has a bass-friendly clean blend.
RNGD — random noise generator meets delay by Janis.LV, great noisemaker. Check out JanisLV's youtube demos if you're into cacophonics.
SONORUS — a modded Blencowe Reverb using PT2399 chips instead of a Belton brick.
SUNNBEAM — a second Sunn to warm your tone, based on the Sunn Beta bass pre.
SUPER-TROUPER — build a SunnT on this one.
SWAGGER — EQD Plumes, but you'll want to build it to Blumes spec.
TAPE DELAY — Aleph Null's funky PT2399er; I was going to get this one, but you can just PM Aleph here on the forum and get one of his boards directly, like I did.
TEST RIG — quick test a circuit, but there are other similar devices here, MadBean, Fuzzdog, JMK... and more feature rich offerings elsewhere — highly recommend JMK's deluxe test-rig type PCB.
ULTRALECTRA — a feature-pimped Electra. Breadboard which Bass-mods you want first before soldering.

That's probably good advice in general, but not sure it applies to the topic of Effects Layouts PCBs.
Buddy's suggestion for breadboarding a BazzFuss actually does apply to the ELS (Effects Layouts Storyboardist) offerings:
BOOTLEGGER is based on the Walrus Contraband, which in turn is based on the BazzFuss — it's a great circuit to toy with on the breadboard before committing it to solder on the ELS Bootlegger PCB.

Or build yourself a BAZZFUSS on an ELS FireBoltFuzz, based on the EQD Bellows, which is another BazzFuss variant.

I've requested a couple of things on this madbean thread and he's restocked them
Thanks for the tip! Unless I'm missing something entirely (very possible), I don't see any way to register an account on this forum. I'm given all of the normal options to log in, retrieve lost password, etc. But since I don't have an existing account, I don't see any option to actually register one. Strange.

Thanks for your thoughts! I know, I left this question very open ended. I am currently missing a good octaver option on my board, but other than that there's always room for more dirt pedals. Some recent builds I've done that I'm VERY fond of were Sushi Box Lab Rat, Chuck D Bones Bass Klon (using PPCB Cliche board), and Spaceman Effects Saturn V (using DeadEndFX board). I'm pretty darn sure I will be building the Chaos Bolt as a couple of my favorite players actually use that original pedal, and I am fond of how they make it sound. Other than that, I really appreciate the suggestions and will definitely look through your list. At a glance, a dual TS10 and Klon modded for bass sounds pretty fantastic.

I think Brian had to shut down registration at one point due to Russian darkweb bots. @bean, are registrations still closed?

You could try messaging storyboardist on IG too.

Thanks. I had sent a message to the Effects Layouts IG a couple weeks ago but I imagine he probably doesn't check that account super often. I'll try again with @storyboardist. I really want that board, man!
