IC Sockets

And all you’re doing is having the option to reuse a TL072..
Tbh I'm mainly using sockets to help with any troubleshooting issues (including IC's installed the wrong way around). That's pretty much the only reason I even use sockets in the first place - troubleshooting pedals with sockets is so much easier than ones without sockets.

Bending the legs is not rocket science! Just place the IC on its side against a flat surface and gently push the plastic body to 90 degrees to the surface. Flip it over and repeat. Whichever type socket works for you is the one to use. My only other observation is that since I've been using only machined sockets I have become more attractive to the opposite sex. Coincidence?

I have what may be a dumb question - why do they manufacture the ICs so that the legs are not in the correct angle to insert into the sockets? Why not make them so they line up with the socket holes?

It's like bun length hot dogs all over again.... why in the hell did we ever make the buns too long to begin with?

Why adapt the wiener to match the bun? Shouldn't we be making wiener length buns instead?

They are splayed that way to allow the spring tension to hold them in place before soldering. Mostly for benefiting automatic processes. Most ICs globally are not socketed.
