What is your favorite "Big Muff" circuit, and why?

Before I built my muff, I researched and listened to clips of all the variants I could and decided I liked the Triangle. So that's what I built, and it turned out as I liked, and satisfies any muff need I have (mine has a mid knob). I also have a Acid Rain, which is a slightly different take...

    Rat Circuit Recommendation?

All the more reason to start with the basic one. For IC, I'd get an OP07 because they are easy to find and sound pretty much identical to the original, but harder to obtain, LM308.

    Rat Circuit Recommendation?

Favorite Rat circuit? Rat. Sorry, but this is a ridiculous question. 🤷‍♂️ 🐀🐀🐀🐀🐀:) (Seriously though, I built a rat with clipping options and a Ruetz mod (it is the Madbean Slow Loris), but it still sounds best in its "stock" setting)

    Adding batteries

Use a switched 9V jack, which will disengage the battery if power is plugged in. I'd also use a stereo jack for the input jack, which allows the battery to be disengaged if there's no cable plugged into the pedal. This post explains it well: beavis audio research

    Thumb Sucker

This is only the second compressor pedal I've ever used. The other is an Orange Squeezer I built over a decade ago. That OS is easy--one knob, you turn it up if you want more compression. The Engineer's Thumb, with so many parameters to control, feels more refined. However, I've realized...

TC Electronic Booster + Line Driver & Distortion Broken Footswitch

Wow they didn't make the switch very accessible. I had a pedal with a switch stuck in one position. When I opened the pedal I could see that it was not an enclosed switch mechanism, and a spring was out of position, and moving it back fixed it. I don't know if you can get at the switch...

    JTM45/Bluesbreaker AIAB

Box of Rock is advertised as being a JTM45 style. It's mosfet based. The Van Pelt (Charlie Brown) drive is a BOR copy with a more tweakable eq. The Golden Falk has a JTM45 mode on its switch. It's a good sounding MIAB but it seems more gainy than a JTM (but maybe that's because I keep the...

    ICL7660SCPAZ vs TC1044SCPA

My impression is that 1044 is considered an upgrade to 7660 (spec wise anyway). I've used both without issues though. lt1054 is supposed to be better than both.

Can someone help me understand the Capacitor values on these pcbs?

so are these islands the fault of the PCB maker, the PCB design tool, or the person who used the PCB design tool?

    2n5457 Replacement

You could use j113 here too. Any jfet for that matter, although you'll need to change RX4 to set the bias properly. (just realized this post is from 2021--hopefully the OP has it sorted by now :))

    Shorting Jacks?

A stereo jack can be used to disable the battery when nothing is plugged into the input of the pedal. Common approach to pedals with batteries.

They're for biasing the transistor. Usually, you aim to get about half the voltage (4.5V) on the collector of the second transistor.

I voted for the 18W Marshall, because I think I'd rather have that than a 5E3. But I'd add a 6G2 to your list.
