Amp Suggestions

I need a small amp for testing / prototyping in the workshop...

The ideal solution I think would be something like the Yamaha THR10 but part of me wants a plain old tube amp.

I don't need reverb, vibrato, effects loops, or any of that business. I'd prefer a full Treble/Mid/Bass tone stack.

Any suggestions? .... before I go and buy a mini plexi... ?

I bought one of those Marshall Origin 5 combos and I’m pretty stoked on it...and that’s the reason I bought it too :D

The only downside is now I want another little 5 watt combo for stereo operations!

I've got a Marshall 50th Anniversary 1W combo of the JTM variation. Pretty cool. Upgraded for a 10" greenback and it's good to go. 0.1W attenuation on board. There's other version than the JTM with full EQ (800, 2000, etc).

I love my Orange Tiny Terror. But it only has one tone knob, which I keep all the way up all the time, as is required of all tone knobs ;).

hard to beat the Yamaha THR line - sound great at all volumes , etc. Work well with pedals, etc.
I have the THR10C and felt the same as you about "wanting" a small tube amp but the Yamaha just works without much compromise.
If you want to go down the whole "small tube amp" rabbit hole - be prepared for a ride,.

I have a Deluxe Reverb and Tweed 5E3 but thats way too much for testing, messing around with.

I actually use my '65 Twin Reissue for testing right now. Despite their reputation it is the perfect bedroom / practice amp.

It sounds massive at low volumes, unlike most smaller (or even larger) amps....

It's just a little bit too large physically for what I need, and the power/standby switches are on the back so it'd be a little bit of a pain to use under my workbench.

probably the dual speakers giving it a better "full" sound (?)

I find a LOT of the smaller tube amps etc are fine in the tube amp department but w/o volume the speakers just can't sound very good.
One of the main reasons I like the THR - it's as much about the speakers / acoustics as the "tube" pedigree.

Somehow the pair just works.

I've tried plugging other heads into the cab, and using other cabs with the chassis... Neither are quite "the same".

I'm leaning towards the THR10 right now I think, mainly because I can put it on a shelf above my bench and it'll take up virtually no room at all.

Check out the Fender Bassbreaker. I think you can pick them up pretty affordably used. Has a three band eq, master volume.

Does it take pedal well?
I'm guessing so if you're suggesting it, but just wanted to have your opinion, as I'm building a pedal for my friend's nephew who has that amp.
Takes them very well, you take any onboard effects out with the app and get most any clean amp you want

I was going to say Fender Champ, but I'm with benny_profane, the $99 Monoprice 5W amp is basically a Chinese Champ clone. Surprisingly good sounding amp, and comes with a Celestion speaker as well.

The Spark is really tempting with that discount code. I'm a bassist, but I have a sweet guitar that has never had an amp.
