Any Bass Players?

Hi all,

I'm a bass player primarily, and I was just wondering if anyone here is a bassist and has built stuff for themselves from here, or has built things for their low stringed brethren that worked well. Cheers!

I'm a bassist on studio stuff because I can just DI it and I've built some fuzzes for bassists in doom metal bands. The Hyperion fuzz proved to be useful in that genre.

I only play bass a little, but I’ve got three projects nearing completion for a bass play friend.
- mad professor Snow White auto wah (pcb from Fuzzdog). Lots of folks online say they’ve the stock guitar version on bass and liked it. I couldn’t find any official info about the mad professor Bass Snow White auto wah. But I did find a comment on the revolution Deux blog where someone suggested changing 2 caps in the filter portion to have a nicet sweep for bass. I agree it’s better that way for bass, so I’m putting those two caps on a switch to select gtr/bass voicing.
-5 knob engineers thumb compressor (pcb also from fuzzdog). Supposed to be fine for bass unmodded. Pedalpcb version is rumored to be coming.
-Rehousing a behringer BSY600 synth machine (I doubt we’ll ever see a diy version of that haha).

I’m also slowly working on a chopped OC-2 veroboard from a layout I found, which only has one octave down to keep the build size manageable. The valve wizard u-boat is similar (supposedly better?) and there’s a pcb available from TH Custom.

one more thought... the unison double tracker board on pedalpcb is a cool chorus sound, made by pitch shifting slight up and down with a slight delay. So it’s like a chorus but Just constant depth without the wobble. Might be cool for bass. Similar to the Keeley 30ms.

I primarily play bass in heavier bands but these are great choices in general. Right now I am using a modded Morely Distortion as a overdrive with clipping options and adjustable bass into a Darkglass vintage. I have a B7K and the Alpha Ominicron, but they suck in a live mix IMO. The MXR bass compressor is a 1176 like compressor without coloration like the Cali's, but is a great compressor for guitar and bass. You can occasionally find "broken" Mark Bass Compressore pedals on Ebay, which are not broken it just needs a high current 12V power supply, this pedal has more coloring due to the high voltage tube inside. The Blower Box always sounds great and I use it occasionally same with the Plumes but with a capacitor change for more bass. I have a veroboard layout for the Barber Deep Fryer which is fairly versatile sounds great and has lots of low end if you want it. Love the Muffin factory as a dirty boost, the dipswitches really allow for no low end loss. I have played around with a OCD circuit but I think it needs some changes to be bass friendly.

When it comes to modulation, delay, and reverb DSP pedals you really can't beat some of the commercial stuff. EHX DSP pedals are cheap better built than newer TC stuff and sound so much better than FV-1 pedals.

I am primarily a bass player and for pedalpcb stuff right now on my board I have: Obsidian (darkglass b3k) overdrive which is killer, an Abyss univibe and a Cataclysm delay. All sound amazing on bass. I have also tried out the Circulator before giving it to a friend and it also sounded great on bass. Haven't dived into any of the dirt pedals yet besides the Obsidian, so I would be curious to know which ones on here sound the best on bass as well (besides the Obsidian of course).

I've made a few things dedicated to bass, mostly on vero except the 1 knob fuzz, Linedriver, and Bass DI.

Random Stranger: an all in one with a Mictester's Really Cheap Compressor, 1 knob fuzz, NE-1 preamp, and THC XLR linedriver (probably my 4th build - and it shows!).
Funkasaurus: Bassballs with the distortion toggle moved to a footswitch.
Phat Boy: A Bass DI clone with a Bassballs on vero.
Darth Punk, Bass Bomb: Modded Dist+ (red LEDs on the gain pot, BAT41 to ground, clean blend). This has to be heard to be believed.

Excellent graphics!

There is always a focus on pedal manufacturers on guitar pedals and of Fuzz's and Overdrives.
There are soo many out there, that I wish the pedal designs, like BUGGS would focus more on thigs like Bass pedals and this Ginger Overdrive.

I gigged for years playing bass. The only issues o really had were one or two overdrives. They weren’t quite right. Everything else works just fine on bass. I’ve built a ton of bass pedals, but sonically , you can get the same tones fiddling with knobs on your set up.The SWAW sounds fantastic stock. The ginger is good, but I never found a real good use for it in my rig, despite building a couple of them. Phasers are killer, fuzzes are hit or miss, just like guitar. My favs are the skreddy P19 and the green Russian. Chorus, I played a stick CE-2 I built, with plenty of bottom end. Delays are great as well. I even had a sound enhancer / expander at he end of my chain.

Bass is my primary instrument and also my primary design focus for my own DIY builds. I see plenty of PPCB projects that look like they'd work great for me for bass and hopefully I'll dive into some of those by early next year.

A few examples of my self designed pedal builds:

And then a couple of DIY Class D bass amps:

This is kind of a zombie thread but I'll contribute. There really are tons of great circuits for bass around here. Ppcb pedals on my board currently are the ocelot, kliche mini(chuck d bones style), low tide, viib, daydream, and xc phase.

Others that have spent a considerable amount of time on the board are the chop shop, snuffy, woodpecker, doom bloom, roboto, captain bit, super heterodyne, hydra, abyss, cream pie, unicab and thumbsucker. Fuzzy fox, desolate and hyperion2 are a stretch on bass but I do use them occasionally when I don't care as much about loss of the lows.
