Bonehead move of the week..

About the same time as your post, I had a funny-smell bonehead moment. I’ve been largely playing without pedals, (I say “without” and really mean three or four, but no additional gain pedals), for the past few months, just to get a fresh perspective and also play with the gain in my amp a bit more. In any case, I decided to use my transcendence boost, and was so sure that it runs on 18v, that I just set the switches on the PS to that…played for awhile, and decided to punch it in, only to hear great squeals of pain and agony! I stomped it off, and thought maybe it just needed to be hooked up better.

But, the box was warm! And, that odd smell that we all get to recognize at some point. I’ll be changing out the charge pump this morning, and most likely the op amp too. (Fingers crossed nothing else went.)

All is fine in Transcendence Land! I replaced both chips and at 9v (doh!) it's working as expected; I'll test the op amp tomorrow, just to see if the charge pump dies so fast that it really doesn't hurt anything else—I'm dubious, but at least it's for science.

In a feat of utter amazement, I did the same fucking thing last night!! (Granted, I was a bit stoned…) today I replaced the charge pump, only, and it’s working as expected. The thing is, I feel that I need to really change the look of the pedal, adding a giant “9 v DC” to the front, maybe in neon yellow. But I really like the look of this pedal, especially with the knob my dumpster diving friend found for me. After the first screw up, I did engrave “9v only” on the end where the plug ins are, but I now realize that I don’t really look there. IMG_1641.jpeg

Sweet knob.

I *may* have used that same line of reasoning once or thrice in my day..

..kinda like the mystery packages that occasionally arrive on my doorstep.. my Love: “what parts are we anticipating today?”

“Hell if I know, I was baked outta my mind!”

Is that thing Bakelite?? Very, very cool knob (man that sounds dirty..)
Yes. It’s cracked, and has a section that sticks out slightly, but as anal as I am, it still doesn’t bother me. It had a bolt in it (to tighten onto the shaft) with a square head, which I cut off and slotted the threaded stub to use. I’m very curious about what it was originally on.

To make you feel better, I couldn’t get the series/parallel switch I had working (I needed to clean up the wiring in that pedal), so I pulled it. Wired up new switches. Red Llama side kept oscillating. I kept getting mad. Stupid me forgot to ground the circuit to the switch and jack.

There. Feel better about blowing up an LED

I reversed the board/jack wires on a GuitarPCB Snow White AW variant.. now that shit was noisy in bypass

Perfect timing for this thread to pop up.

Today did not rise to the level of headache, just boneheadedness. After getting a little free time to jump into building the Amethyst version of the Boss DM-2 delay, I found myself having to remove not 1, not 2, no 20x 1K resistors that I managed to install before realizing they are supposed to be 10K. Argh.

If practice makes perfect, my skill at using an 18g needle to clear PCB holes has been drastically improved this evening.

Not my day. I stopped soldering after this and just went and noodled around with synths instead.

Is that a hypodermic needle?

I worked in a needle factory for a couple years and I used to get stabbed by those stupid things all the time. 18s are brutal.

It is, indeed, an 18g hypodermic needle. I have a lot of leftovers from when we were doing subcutaneous fluids for our cat. This is about right for typical PPCB and AionFX through holes. I have some 22's when I need smaller.
