Do you own a Rickenbacker?

I own a bunch of imaginary Rickenbackers. Unfortunately they’re not valuable enough for me to trade them in for a physical Rickenbacker :’(

No Rics here, though I’ve always wanted one. I do plan to build a 4003/Precision hybrid relatively soon though.

Been my No. 1 since 2010.

Had the frets replaced with Stainless jumbos. Mastery bridge. Firebird pickups in toaster covers.

A beauty! I've always had a soft spot for mapleglo 620s and 381s.
Interesting that you swapped to firebird pickups! What made you think to do that?–– I bet it sounds phenomenal!

That's lovely! Cool that it's your main guitar. I'm curious what your guitar preference was before getting this?

Fenders. Went through a few over the years. Tele Deluxe, Jag, Toronado
I'm a small dude and the 620 is just right. PRS-ish neck profile but with the narrower nut width. Plus the body is compact. Not all that light, though, because it's all maple.

I tried the Lollar 'Broilers' toaster clones first and it didn't really work for me. Got a fever for Firebirds and asked another pedal DIYer who went into the pickup winding business to try an experiment. Worked out great. The ALNICO '63 Firebird pickup style is - to my ears - like a great sounding single coil without the hum.

I've had an order in with Creamery pickups for a couple months for a set of his Rickenbacker hum buckers, which he told me are the same dual-blade Alnico construction as the '63 Firebirds. No idea how long I'll be waiting for those.

Recently got a PRS Vela and loved the feel so much I put a Lollar El Rayo in the bridge and one of his Firebirds in the neck, so it's now my "Rock'n'Roll" guitar. That guitar and those pickups are epic.

That pic is actually a bit out of date. Didn't really realize. I've since gone to a trapeze tailpiece and love it. Better tuning stability and changing strings is a LOT easier. Also stuck a Tom Petter wildflowers Honeybee sticker on the pick guard. My plan is to buy some reverse-etch white/clear acrylic and use my laser to cut that graphic into it and also replace the truss rod cover.

Of course I love this guitar, but you're right to want to try one out first. I've made a lot of upgrades to this over the years and it's come a long way. The frets they come with are tiny, bridge was rattly and required maintenance, strings a PIA to change, etc. Maybe not always the case, but these days I think you can get a much better playing and reliable guitar for that kind of money. Hurts to say that, though.

Also as a huge Tom Petty fan, I gutted and rebuilt a terrible boutique amp and labeled it the 'Wilbury.'

I was looking through the amp thread the other day and saw this. Wanted to ask you about the compression mods. I've been thinking about doing that to the ef86 channel on my TC15

It works really well. It's on the subtle side, but I think it's worth it.

Is that a black 650? Had no idea they ever made such a thing.
Yep, I can never remember which letter corresponds to which colour, but it's a 650-something. I've had it for about 5 years now but have never really found much cause to play it tbqh; the neck is enormous and I may not be a humbucker person.

I have an '86 330 fireglo as well, which is an amazing guitar that plays great and sounds a+++. I've been trying to find a reasonably priced 610 to replace the 650, but they're a scarce guitar.

Yes! 1974 4001.

Has the infamous wavy tuners that self-destruct and fall apart. Made a fix for them so that they no longer fall apart and can be re-opened, re-greased, and possible to flip the key around so they can be on bass or treble side. Been fixing these tuners for Rick owners since :)
