ThanksThe first has an 1n4001 reverse-biased to ground. This will dump power to ground (and may destroy the diode in the process) if wrong polarity power is applied. The second has a forward-biased 1n5817. This will block power from entering the circuit if wrong polarity power is applied.
Both are correct and will get the job done. The first incurs no voltage drop, but is potentially destructive to the diode. The second incurs a small voltage drop but is less likely to result in the destruction of the diode.
