EQD Re-releasing the Life Pedal again

Wonder if it'll be a regular production model this time? Lord knows there's still demand for it.

(also from the looks of it it'll have a third footswitch, probably for the Octave.

:unsure::unsure::unsure:.)

Okay so $300 is more in line with what I expected these to be launched at. Still can’t suss out if it’s a limited release or a production model but I’m assuming the latter (don’t know how EQD does their serial numbers but if it’s just a straightforward count, that serial of 2472 seems high for a limited run)

So, things I’ve noticed:

——-

1. The ad copy has gone from

“The “Amplitude” side is faithfully modeled after the classic “White Face” distortion unit, right down to the LM308 IC and tantalum caps”

To

“The “Amplitude” side is faithfully modeled after the classic “White Face” distortion unit, using modern, reliable components to last a lifetime.”

So I’m guessing no more LM308?

——-

2. The bit about the octave circuit changed from:

“The Octave in Life Pedal is an all-discrete, analog full-wave rectifier circuit built around a pair of Russian Germanium diodes”

To

“The Octave in the Sunn O))) Life Pedal is an all-discrete, analog full-wave rectifier base on a classic vintage design”

as well as this bit from the intro - “The octave section has been fine tuned to make it more pronounced without losing the bottom end”

Probably also means they switched to silicon diodes and may or may not have tweaked other values in the circuit?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I read from builders I trust that the LM308s that EQD have been using in the Life Pedals were fake ones.

And also this is marketing BS for "we changed it to SMD so we can mass produce it more easily".

I thought the SunnO)))) Rat was a Turbo Rat?...
Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson have tons of Rats. (Although, probably less than the number of Model Ts they own.) Original ‘whiteface’ models, modded circuits, and Turbo Rats. If you’re talking about what they actually use in SunnO))) (and other projects), I think the ‘whiteface’ is the mainstay for both, but I’ve seen board pictures with both ‘whiteface’ and Turbo Rats on them. They do kinda get hung up on the LM308.

I only mentioned it because I just got that big, "Pedals: The Coffee Table Book" book, and I was excited to see a SunnO))) pedal in it, and it was supposedly THE Rat that made them go DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM, and I was at first surprised, and then not, by the fact that it was a Turbo Rat...

Huh. I mean, they do use is. But, I don’t think that’s really accurate.

On the cover of GrimRobes Live 101008 there’s a RAT pedal with a Sunn O))) logo. Is the RAT part of your arsenal?
Yes, the RAT is the main pedal Stephen and I use.

RAT freaks are obsessed with the LM308 op-amp used in older models and the recently discontinued “whiteface” reissues. Are you that picky, and does your RAT have that chip?
That’s exactly what we both use. We have some other versions of RAT pedals and some modded Rats as well, but the main one on all the recordings is the original RAT with the 308. It’s the foundation of the front end of our sound before it hits the amp. I’ve used the pedal since the ’80s. I think I still have the same one I used back then.

That doesn't surprise me. The book is decent, but there are no citations, which immediately leads me to doubt its 100% accuracy. I'll go get some shots from the book in a bit...

Attached are some shots of the book. He mentions the Turbo Rat being THE one in the last sentence of that paragraph…
