Fairchild J201 in TO-92 package available on Small Bear

Hi. It looks like there are some NOS Fairchild J201s available on Small Bear again. Any personal opinions on if these are worth grabbing, or would you stick to SMD J201s going forward? I myself am on the fence on whether to pick up a few.

I guess one could do the math and prove me wrong, but at $2 a pop for TH... Even with adapter boards (whether from a vendor, self-ordered, DIY'd or otherwise) I'd just as soon stick with SMDs.

100x MMBFJ201s from mouser sit at ~$15 (minus shipping)
I don't order 100x PCBs at a time, but if you panelized them properly, I'd reckon you'd have a decent QoS price on them
leads would just be "junk" clippings from other TH parts

My $0.02 anyway

You're not wrong... I guess I am just getting sucked into the hype of trying to source these in the TO-92 package. Its not a big deal to just solder the SMD version directly to the PCB either when the board has the pads, but on the other hand we're talking NOS here, and part of me wants in on that action! lol

200 adapters for $4

Even though my post covid component shortage era review is still on smallbear, I wouldn't trust these to be legit NOS. I just don't have the faith in synthbearcube to do any due diligence on "NOS " parts.

Coming from a guy who's bought 10-15 #s of transistor pulls/random bags of components in the last 2 years, there's nothing sexy about NOS J201 to me, personally. Maybe if I'm getting them for a penny each but not @$2 a pop.
/End rant

Have you used these adapters from Aliexpress? Are they any good? The price sounds too good to be true.
I have some. Somewhere. Couldn't find them so ordered more. Should be here in the next week or so. But they're single sided boards with 3 pads. Kinda hard to screw up.

Forget the $2 J201's. I think I am going to order the adapters from Aliexpress along with 100x SMD J201s from Mouser and have enough to last me a lifetime of pedal building.

Does JLPCB not have MMBFJ201s? Is there a way to order a pre-populated adapter panel?

That's a good point. Looks like Benny beat me to it. I think I got sick of Eagle spamming my project with non-madbean parts libraries and disabled them, but yeah, if one used the proper part that should work just fine.
