The Tone Bender here uses OC81 so maybe not exactly old school? I don't know but those ussr old stock germ oc5 are plentiful. I built a tone bender years ago and thought it was really nice sounding.

should I be looking for another build that is more interesting in some way?

I suppose the trannies are interchangeable and only need biased or a change in resistors or something I'm not super knowledgeable about.

Model number effectively doesn't matter, mainly it's hFE and leakage. So just measure, see what's recommended in a given circuit, and go nuts.
