Yeah, definitely sounds like a popularity contest, with a bit of obscurity-cool cred thrown in.
My new take: Guitarguitar posted a poll with names of people who have some sort of signature guitar/gear available (the only plausible explanation I can think of for H.E.R.) and asked random internet passersby to rank them in order.
Strangely enough, -I- was voted the most influential guitar player of the 21st century on a poll I posted on Instagram, beating out such legends as Dimwit Flathead of The Grues. lol.

Frusciante certainly belongs at the top of whatever this weird list is. But not because of RHCP.
I've never seen the point of lists like this. Or music awards. It's not a competition. It's just a way to sell stuff by people who like to categorise stuff. Where I live Poison Ivy was a hugely influential guitarist in the early '80s. I think even Poison Ivy would suggest that she's not the best guitarist in the world. And if there is a best guitarist I'm not sure I want to listen to them!

Yup. Just like in the 80s (and probably before), guitar rags had their reader polls, as well as the music gossip rags (Circus, Creem, Hit Parader etc) had their polls as well. Meant nothing, and was simply a marketing ploy to get the contact information from folks who bought the magazines at news stands etc and weren’t subscribed.
