How many phase stages is enough?

Happy to see yeah trudging through it some more for the greater good man. Not sure what the Death Spiral is but that layout is niiiiice.
Been busy with some Standard Series redesigns plus a few other goodies.
The most I have access to is 8 via the MBP Glasshole. wouldn’t mind to try a 12 stage. @owlexifry the carrot dangles eternally. Like Tantalus we wait.

I had an idea for a 24 stage phaser with a 12-position rotary to select any even number of stages between 2 and 24. Plus a toggle switch to remove the very first stage, for those uncommon but fun odd-nuber-of-stages sounds— anything between 1-23 stages.

For guitar? You get declining results once you go above 6 stages and need to add more and more to get a deeper effect until you do just achieve flange.
12 is about the sensible limit but 8 is probably more than enough, 6 is where it's at but no harm in tossing in some extra fixed stages, the MXR Phase 100 is six swept and 4 fixed and the Final Phase is 6 swept and two 2nd order fixed.
The more the merrier on synth though.

This being an optical phaser, 12 stages seems like the most LDRs I could hope to cram into a 1590BB enclosure. I'm thinking 2 groups of 6 LDRs around two different LEDs. I love the sound of the Glasshole, but want a few more features. I'm thinking if I skip the rotary switch, I might have enough room for the extra stages. Just trying to do a quick sanity check to see if anyone else wants that much phasing.

That's an interesting idea, but I think it would require a larger enclosure, maybe a 1590XX or something.
