Metal - DC Jack problems

Hey guys!

I recently ordered some Metal DC Jacks because I wanted to tighten them from the outside - and decided to try something new.

So I threw it into a pedal I was building and was scratching my head as to why It was only getting power if I wiggled it around.

Anyway, so I detached it from the enclosure and tried it again and everything worked fine. Does it need to be grounded being metal, or what am I missing here?

Polarity matters, if you wired it up like a typical pedal (center negative) you just made one giant short, that jack isn’t going to work with a pedal power supply, unless insulted, your chassis/ enclosure is ground,

Yeah, I just wired it up like usual since it worked in testing.

What are my options? Can I wire it centre positive or does that need a specialized power supply?

My advice is replace that jack with one of the typical styles.

Good news is that Schottky diode probably just saved you from some real problems and it’s an easy fix.

You'd inevitably forget to grab the reversed polarity pigtail and pop the 5817.....just guessing...not from experience

Yeah, I have a bunch of these. They just dont work with way pedal are powered. Too bad too - nice plugs and mount from the inside.

Yeah ... I though they looked cool, solid and convenient on my first component order! Fortunately, I did not get to use them!

Yeah same. Had to order some plastic ones, but I got smaller ones because I liked how those metal ones fit.

Luckily I had a few of the old ones around to finish the build.
