Son of Ben

Overall, I'm very happy with this one! The enclosure came out so much better than expected and I'm glad I decided to give Tayda's Matte Black Sand another go. This is two passes of white, one pass of color (using Roland VersaWorks color swatch for the green), and gloss varnish. I think it came out great!

No modifications to the circuit, transistors are TO-92 Siliconix J201 that I had on hand from a Small Bear purchase a while back. Everything biased up well and I ended up using the trick that @Chuck D. Bones posted to set the bias for Q1 (I don't have the link handy at the moment, but it involved tacking a wire between the anode side of D100 and another component, then measuring *I believe* R4?). Either way, it worked so thank you Chuck!

This pedal is very sensitive to pick attack and has a wide range of useful gain available.

Looks great, the print on the Black sand is a great look, especially with that green, it pops in a good way! Nice work, got one in the queue.

I dig the name you picked. Very fitting.
Thank you, it seemed like an appropriate choice!

Thank you, when I opened this one up, I was so happy with the way it turned out. This is also my first time using one of Tayda's predrilled enclosures in fear that things wouldn't line up centered. Probably the best $1 extra I've spent in a while, :ROFLMAO:!

It usually lines up pretty good, unless you have really precise design, or pot markers, then it risks being a tad unaligned (but within their tolerance…). But yeah, the predrilled for pedal pcb are great!

I'll definitely go this route on the simpler stuff as long as I'm not using the PedalPCB I/O board. For more complicated stuff like this one listed in my Lone King Overdrive Build Report, even 0.5mm off-center of where they were supposed to be would have ruined the entire thing.

As a local, I approve of this aesthetic. I've wanted a Gnostic bass head since I tried one like 15 years ago at Old Town Music. I remember thinking it looked like an old mattress. I built the Benson pre so I can tell myself it's just as good since they no longer make them. Sigh. It is not. Still a great sounding dirt box though!

Very nice!
Thanks @Barry!

Thank you! I just looked up the Gnostic Amp and it definitely gives off that "vintage mattress" vibe. I decided to build the Son of Ben primarily because of all the hype and I'm glad I did, it does sound good!

My partner has Illustrator and it looks like I can download Versaworks. I have never used either. Is Versaworks quick to figure out? Do you need a base template of the drilled enclosure to figure out where to put the labels?

It's a long thread, but almost everything you need to know/learn about ordering through Tayda's UV printing service can be found on this thread.

Versaworks requires a UV printer to be connected to the PC in order to run.

You'll most likely do all of your design work in Illustrator or Affinity Designer.

Which one is easier to use? I haven't used either in the past. (I realized after I had a closer look at the Versawork download page that it wasn't that simple and definitely do not have a UV printer.)

Thanks. Having a read now. Might take a bit since it is a 26 page thread. Hopefully I can find a basic template for a 3 knob125b that I can modify in illustrator or affinity designer.
