Unique position - can't find a guitar I want!

I have a small number of guitars - I think it's seven - and can't seem to find anything I want/need enough to pull the trigger on. I don't have any Fender guitars at the moment so had a look at a couple of Strats yesterday: a CS '60s style Strat, a "Professional" Strat and a "Player's" Strat. Obviously the CS Strat sounded best but not by much. And it was the worst set-up Strat - quite hard to play. Easily fixed I guess, but still... The Mexican Player's Strat sounded almost as good and was way easier to play but had 9-42 strings which are too light for me. Again, something I would change/fix as soon as I got the guitar home, but still not a very exciting guitar to play. The Professional was perhaps the nicest to play but still meh.

Then I tried the '60s Thinline Tele I have always liked the look of - it's in natural ash with a maple neck. It sounded better - played well too. Still a bit ho-hum though.

I guess I'm spoilt by what I already have. I can't see the point in getting something new if it doesn't excite me or do something fantastic. And I look at all the guitar stores crammed with Fenders right now and there is nothing which speaks to me. Actually it's almost as if Fender is making guitars specifically for me to not like! I like guitars with medium jumbo frets, but Fender are using "tall narrow" frets which in practise often mean vintage style, as they get levelled to the point of not being very high any more. The colours are becoming increasingly ugly and the guitars heavier. And what it wrong with the old style tuners? Fender got tuners right way back when - I love old-school tuners with the safety posts.

Then there's Gibson, where if it's any good it's stratospherically priced! I love a good Gibson but can't afford any more right now. And Fender have stocked the local stores to capacity with cheaper Gretsches which have zero appeal to me. The Gretsches I love with the B3 and B6 Bigsbys (no tension bar) are few and far between. The Japanese Gretsches are awesome guitars but hard to find, and the range seems to be dominated by "Player's" versions with tension bar Bigsbys. Any time you put a tension bar on a Bigsby it loses its feel. Who are these aimed at? When the original is so good why mess with what made them so good?

Seems to me that all the interesting smaller builders are getting crammed out of music stores. Fender is dominating with less and less interesting models. Every store has all the same new Fenders and they're all ugly.

Does anyone like what's available right now?

Yes, but for the most part, they’re not ”factory guitars.” Don Grosh, Collings, —Lowden makes a single cut with P-90s that I would love to own! 7 may not seem like many, but it is enough so that you can really have all your bases covered.

Its tempting to ask why you want a new guitar. I can’t remember if I’ve ever gotten a guitar without having a really specific itch to scratch; either the knowledge (and lust) for that specific guitar (say, the above mentioned Lowden, with a Blackwood top), or a really specific type of guitar, and it was a matter of narrowing down the search. (Now the search may expose you to other guitars, that you didn’t know you wanted, because they don’t meet the specifics of what you were searching for, but ….)

I assembled my last two electrics, both from Warmoth parts. I had really specific aspects on each, that really would be custom features from any builder (neck dimensions, radius, fret size, electrics, etc.).

I've had a MIM black stratocaster for a couple of years that's been awesome. I just upgraded to an American Ultra though... so it'll likely need to find a new home.

I also built my own version of a Noventa Jazzmaster... looks beautiful, and I'm really starting to find its niche and voice...

At this point I'm also looking to buy/build something I don't have. Maybe an SG... I'm also building, planning to build a couple of guitars as well...

"Its tempting to ask why you want a new guitar."

That's a fair question. I guess mainly because I'm bored. If I had a band to play with right now I doubt I would even bother looking, because I have guitars which really are what I want! I have a Gretsch '53 VS Duo Jet which I have put TV Jones Filter'tron Classics which look like Dearmonds in and it is simply the best sounding guitar I have ever owned. It really is "the sound in my head", especially now that I have built amps and pedals specifically to suit it. I also have an incredible ES-225 RI which sounds as good as any guitar has a right to.

But I guess we're always looking for something which may be better or which may have a sound we love. I find that I get used to what I have and sometimes just need to play something else for a while to realise how good I have it. So, not a lot of sound logic involved.

But my point about how boring what is generally available still stands I guess. It really is a hunt for what makes us happy. I have wanted a USA Casino for ages simply because I love the sounds Paul McCartney gets. That dream was realised earlier this year and I doubt I'll part with that guitar - it's a belter and sounds fab. But I got the only one they had and now there are none available for anyone else here.

And I didn't know that Lowden made guitars with P90s. I'll have to check that out!

Dave's Guitars in Wisconsin are an excellent dealer and have quite a few Rics. A friend of mine recently bought a 330 and I am amazed at how good it is. He has set it up really well - he's a guitar tech - and he got rid of the boominess in the neck pickup. He set it up a semi-tone down with round wound 11-50 strings and it sounds like the twangiest acoustic you ever heard - it's a great sound.

I have a professional series strat as my #1 .. I literally only have two electric guitars.. A custom tele parts caster I put together with very premium stuff and the pro strat... My strat fit/finish/sound is superb..

I’m gonna build one. Solo Guitars is having a sale next Saturday. If you can’t find what you want, build it. That’s how I got into pedals…

I'd like to have another nice Gretsch someday, my most recent purchases have been PRS in the S2 and SE series, very nice guitars for the money, I did pick up an Epi 335 on a recent sale

I keep avoiding going in to an actual Dave's for 1 reason, he's got so many lefties including ric's and gibsons that I'd end up borrowing enough for a house!

I've played a few PRS guitars, and honestly I'm not a fan of the gloss on the necks, they feel "stickier" than Gibsons... of course, it could just be the age (or lack thereof) on the finish as well...

I am partial to American G&L if you’re into modern features. I have played some nice Japanese fenders and some decent custom shop ones. I was also looking at 70s vintage which currently go for reasonable amounts of money and they often sound great. If you want to go beyond Fender, but same style, I have also tried some good Nash and there is a Japanese made brand called Moon that makes fantastic Strats. I wish I had bought the one I tried a couple years ago. I am also completely uninterested by the new Fender models. The stuff from 10 years ago (American Deluxe maybe) was really good tho, so if you find an used one…

Never tried one, but a lot of strat lovers I know seem to really like Suhr guitars

I want a 660/12 in jetglo with the gold pickguard and looks like Dave's doesn't have one either
That would be cool! My friend's 330 is in Mapleglo which I think is perfect but he wants a black one. Black looks good but shows every single mark and fingerprint... Says the guy with two Duo Jets!

I don't think I've seen a new Ric with a gold pickguard for years. You could order one but Ric orders can take a long time.
