Backstory...

Was at my FLGS (favorite local guitar store) today for my lesson. After my lesson I always look around to see what is new. They had a one of the new SG Supremes in, so I gave that a whirl. Sounded good, but I think I like my 61 custom I got for effectively the same price better. They also had nice 24-fret Tom Anderson Angel with a Floyd on consignment, but I wasn't terribly crazy with the bridge pickup. I'd been looking at the Mojotone Lerxt amps online, but obviously they didn't have any of those in the store. However, one of my friends at the store had brought in his personal Silver Jubilee combo amp and asked me if I'd like to play it... (which was really nice of him, as this is his gigging amp - I asked if he was sure and he said "I've played tons of your stuff so sure!")

... so into the loud room I go. I've only got one of my strats with me, so I grab a Bog Standard Les Paul Standard (unburst with Burstbuckers) off the wall to see what it can do... and... well... wow... Made that Standard sound absolutely amazing. With a little tweaking I was able to start getting some really good Rush-like sounds out of it (clearly limited more by the squishy hairless ape at the end of the signal chain than the equipment itself). Then my friend comes in and shows me it's other party tricks... which are extensive. Given it has really nice clean and crunch channels, and if you mess around with the input gain you get some amazing Plexi out of it too...

... then I glance over and they have one spankin' new Silver Jubilee head that's been sitting around for months also in the loud room (I'm not sure there was actually a cunning plan involved, but if so, it was very cunning!). Apparently they're not a Marshall dealer anymore since the ownership change and this is it as Marshall equipment goes in the store... so they "made me an offer I couldn't refuse."

At this point I've got it running through a Two-Rock 2X12 vertical cabinet - but eventually I want to pair it up with a 2X12 with at least one V30... though if anyone has any other recommendations, I'm all ears.

Needless to say Steggo and especially our tech guru Steggi are quite excited to check out the new toy...

First guitar I played through the amp was something also relatively new. A couple of weeks ago I'd gone to the Gibson Garage and this one followed me home a few days later (was nice to pay Oregon rather than Nashville sales tax)...

Custom Les Paul R9 - 01.jpg

I think I have a problem...

That being said - one thing I love about this new amp, is it has a 5W mode. Yes, it isn't going to have the same punch as full power, but much like my Vox AC15 - it's a tube amp I can actually play in the house without blowing out a wall...

Oh man, that’s fabulous. Sounds like you scored really well. The only problem here is that you need another Les Paul.
Errrr...

I've got four at this point...

Epiphone Studio that I've upgraded with Gibson pups and vintage wiring
Epiphone Alex Lifeson
Gibson Standard (that I'm thinking of swapping out to 496R / 498T pups)
... and the the R9 above...

Lesson 1 -- don't ever do that!! Next to my divorce, that is the most expensive lesson I have ever learned.

Lesson 2 -- Don't take in strays -- well ok I've done it too with this guy...

Lesson 3 -- don't listen to me -- do whatever makes you happy!

I'm all about it dude!

Several years ago I delivered a custom pedal build to a guy at the place where they were setting up to play a gig that night.... He had a Silver Jubilee full stack.

"Wow man, that's a nice amp"

He holds out his guitar... "Here."

It was cranked... Man. I'll never forget what that first open A chord sounded (no, felt) like.

Heh... we've had several cats "follow us home" - including this miscreant:

Sadly we lost my favorite of our cats last year... but she was a sweetie (don't let the serious expression fool you!)

I'm so sorry about your loss. My little Harley (aka Fat Boy) is at least 14 or 15 years old (vet can't say for sure), and he's getting old, and I know he's not going to be with me forever, and it breaks my heart to think about that. I try to make every day of his life special.

Thanks, I appreciate it. She was a great cat, but was really suffering at the end. I think she was about 15 and had been an indoor-outdoor cat. I'm out in a rural area and the cats keep the area (mostly) rodent free... and are always kind enough to share (just don't walk out the front door onto the porch in your bare feet!).

Beautifull Marshall Silver Jubilee.

Tell me about it, I've stepped on a bird or two (in my socks -- no less) that were placed where he knew I would find them. That's not half as bad as the mice he would bring into the house and drop at my feet as an offering -- only to watch them scurry under the oven. I mean, WTF little dude, your job is to keep them out of the house and you're binging them in -- he and I had long discussions after that to be sure.

Nice catch with the Jubilee! Now I’m thinking I should get a Lester. Except the only one I’ve ever liked playing was a LP Special Tribute with P90s that I got to try at CME a few years ago and I still regret not buying.

The Burstbucker 61 that are in the Unburst 60s LP standards are one of my favorite pickups (even though some seem to hate them). I have the same ones in my Sg (stock), and I found a set that I put in my Flying V.
But that jubilee is also a killer amp. Still don’t know why Marshall didn’t copy that diode clipping scheme for the JCM900 series as it was just so useful!
