What’s on *YOUR* workbench?

Oh yeah I'll definitely watch a few videos, especially since I won't be buying a very expensive kit.

A few years back, I drank quite a bit at home and apparently did some drunk ebaying.........because a box showed up at my house a month later from India full of Tiger Eye and Ocean Jasper. I remember nothing from that purchase, luckily it wasn't a mail order bride.
It could be worse! A friend of mine started drinking early in the morning here in Southern California, he woke up as he was being arrested for being NAKED on the beach in Hawaii!!!!

I just brought this ancient Califone 1300av back from the brink. The gears were full of tiny tiny grains of sand smaller than the point of a needle that were making the belts slip. I'll probably add a 1/4" jack for the mic in. It's got a panel for the external speaker out where I could easily add another jack

I saw the photos before I saw who posted this, and I immediately though @Harry Klippton - I was not disappointed when I saw who posted this...

What is going on here? I was hoping you were gonna crack this case

Well, the trace for the ONC checked out (missing a cap - C5 in the MadBean schem). I've futzed with the values, and, depending on transistors, its either way too muffled or way too saturated unless it's after a buffer. Same goes for the Pepper Spray.

Watching this demo -
They don't sound too different with the current transistors, so maybe they're working fine 🤷🏻. Though, they don't get as gainy as his when whe dimes the gain

Right now the Pepper Spray is populated to Big Clang specs (built three of those and they all sounded gnarly), and the One Knob is Albini spec. When I get a minute, I'm gonna swap the transistors out in each for 390x and 508x pairs

Always exciting when a drill bit this small works without breaking. #77 bit .018”.

I’m attempting to fix a cable tester that lost a trace from a battery leakage. The trace runs through a via, so then plan is to poke a resistor leg through the via and solder from both sides. Wrapping the jumper around the edge of the board probably would have been easier.

Hmmm yeah uhh maybe no thanks?

On my workbench? Currently, an SSI2130 VCO Evaluation Board. Thinking about a drone/drone-follower circuit with this puppy.

And talk about some very specific resistor values (267R, 4K02, 4K75, 12K7, 19K6, 22K1, 49K9, 267K & 499K) . . . . .

A few lil buds

Really digging all three of these, and will be getting to some demos and proper build reports once my mic setup gets here.

I've got one more of these lil Bud boxes, and I'm not quite sure what I wanna put in it. Any suggestions?

Those are adorable. Are those Kilo knobs?

For the last one, maybe a Vox Repeat Percussion? Unless you want to stick with fuzz. Scrambler or super fuzz in that case?
They might be, they match the specs of the OEDL-50-3-5. I got them from StompBoxParts' clearance section as B-stock.

Trying to stick to fuzzes, the Scrambler should fit, but I also kinda want to build an FY-2 🤔. I think the older, simple, nasty fuzzes fit this aesthetic nicely. I was gonna do a Gainster in the last one, but that's much too hi-fi and refined 😅

Talk to @finebyfine for a nasty octave fuzz suggestion.

Hard to go wrong with a scrambler but there’s definitely more pissed off sounding octave fuzzes. (Although a boosted scrambler is beautiful) The FY-2 is IMHO a must build if only for the historical importance of it - the Super Fuzz and Hyper Fuzz’s tone controls do make the circuit more versatile.

I’m personally not a fan of the Foxxtone but it and the Octavia are hard not to imagine in those awesome enclosures. I think opamp full wave rectifier based octaves won’t sound as nasty as I would imagine something in those enclosures should sound, *but* some of the Escobedo op amp octaves (moonn sells boards for at least one) do get damn nasty.

Looking up demos for nasty fuzzes, but the FY-2 is in the lead primarily because it's one I haven't built before, and it seems to be a bit uglier sounding than the Superfuzz. The Univox Square Wave and Zonk Machine are also pretty enticing. I also keep going back to that recent Warm Audio Tone Bender demo and considering doing one of those, though the Zonk sounds pretty similar, going off of YouTube vids

The Foxx would definitely be pushing it as far as space goes, which would be a nice challenge. But, I'm not sure I want to cram that many controls in one of these. With all the jacks, even my low profile deals, it's pretty cramped

So technically not my workbench... but... well, first some backstory. My son took the metalworking merit badge last summer - which involved a lot of blacksmithing - and loved it. We have a friend who is a professional blacksmith / bladesmith who offers classes... so for our birthdays (which were technically a couple of months ago... but school schedules and all) we got a knife making class. So today we went up and spent the day forging our own knives... so here's the one I made:

My arms are very tired now... but the boy is pretty much wiped out as well... so at least I was able to sort of keep up with him! *lol*

The Square Wave is KILLER. Criminally underrated. If you do it make sure to put a feedback cap across the first transistor to quell the noise - I’m on my phone otherwise I’d link to details but it solves the noise issue without impacting how brutal it sounds
