What’s on *YOUR* workbench?

Man, I love that faceplate. Are you going to mod the circuit or go stock. I built one stick and was thinking about a second one modded.
I think you need to mod another one. When I get time this summer, I'm going to finish the Fender-based rack preamp. I have a Tweed Deluxe circuit built to Dumble specs. It should sound awesome

Well. Trying to doin. Anyone know about alpha numeric displays?

It's almost fuzzy
Every knob except the volume knob popped right off. Pretty sure it has been super glued. Hope the pot survived.

That's Miller High Life.

High Life doesn't appear to have eaten into any traces like it did the bottom panel-- at first glance.

Edit, fu**in forgot to put gloves on again. 20 years of cheap cigarettes leaves a hell of a stench on the hands.

Forgot to take a picture but populated and soldered the Abyss, Fuzz Cadet, Blue Sheep, Acapulco Tone and Antithesis. Only hitch was that I didn't have a 14-pin socket for the Abyss, but for whatever reason I did have some 6-pin sockets, so I used a 6 and an 8 pin socket in, uh, series? 😅

I'll try and figure out my issue with Tayda and too dark images so I can make an order for a new Fuzz Cadet, but the others are workable so I should have my hands busy with them for a while. Also taking ideas for what I could use the Fuzz Cadet enclosure for (so 3 knobs and a switch preferably), I'll also have to look up the thread about stripping UV paint to figure out what I could do to the enclosure itself.

Oh, forgot to post this one:

The text is "War" in Finnish, so it's probably not too hard to guess which pedal this is (it's Mk. II). I've had the pedal built for a year or so, originally had a plain enclosure but my wife never got around to painting this (the word and the cloud/rainbow) so I repurposed that and ordered an UV print instead. It looks gorgeous and I still love the pedal! Might be a touch of the honeymoon too, but I much prefer it over the Danube fuzz which is another Muff I've built. This one has much more clarity and definition, and the bottom end can be really nicely big and percussive. Might not be for everyone, but I like it a lot.

What's wrong with it?

I belongs to a metalhead, dropped, spilled and been through an apartment fire.

LCD is borked and dirty/bad pots and switches. Still makes sound and seems to function.

The screen is the perplexing bit. Not a standard 16 pin. 13 pins at 1.27 spacing and 2 pins for backlight AK to the side. Service manual lists 1 part number on diagram "NCOG005H02" that's a dead end.
The part breakdown doesn't help as they omitted it on the list. See #13

Doh!
Nevermind, found the korg PN in the parts list. NCOG005H02. But no beans on Google.
I may just tack some Dupont wires onto the board and try to attach a different screen to test its functionality. I have 3 16x2 screens I grabbed from Chaney for a couple bucks. Hoping that will work

Alternatively, someone has that whole pcb on eBay for $110/Best offer. That may be cheaper than replacing all the bad pots and switches, assuming deoxit would clean out most of them. Would definitely be faster.

The Abyss is up and running, it looked gorgeous in the picture but I edited it down so it looks more like how it looks to me IRL.

At first I was a bit disappointed in how I could only really keep the intensity low or it was way too choppy, but after looking at some demos and a gutshot of the real deal I tweaked the LDR positions a bit (they were touching the LED, I moved then back a little bit, maybe 1mm) and now it's much smoother and the intensity is much more usable up high. I still prefer a low setting, but then I also like all my modulation more on the subtle side.

Overall I think I like this one, plus it's nice to have a different modulation in the front instead of all of them post-drives. Will have to see after the honeymoon period. I also really liked it on a subtle setting, combined with the Good Vibes post-amp, which is also quite subtle (just right for me) pedal. Even thought briefly about putting both circuits in the same enclosure, just one footswitch and maybe a toggle to take out the Good Vibes if necessary. Maybe that could be my first combo build, if I do wires for the Good Vibes pots could probably fit it in a 1590BB or BB2 at least. But I'll have to try having both of them before the amp or drives to see if I'd really like it, or if a pre-and-post arrangement is better (although of course that could also be done using two sets of inputs and outputs, maybe even switched jacks).

Would you mind sharing a gutshot of your build? I'd like to see the LDR spacing for myself.

Sure! Here you go, shitty picture but you can probably get the idea:

Actually comparing it to the original again I think mine are still a bit closer, so I might try moving them a touch more backwards. Here's a shot of the internals for example (in the image gallery). I think the LDR's maybe should be standing straight up, not leaning forward very much at all.

Bringing a little life back to a $20 FB Marketplace find. A tiny investment for the learning experience. Headstock was cracked at the scarf joint, so that was an easy fix. Cleaned up the fretboard and level/crown/polish on the frets. Sanded the body down, did some filling with epoxy, primed, painted with Dupli-Color, and 2K clear. The back of the neck is oil and wax. I was a little light on a few edges with the clear/paint and you can see a little sand through. I hate it, but it's not really worth trying to fix it. I'm already in twice the $20 purchase price on paint alone :). Humbucker sized P90s are on the way along with the rest of the hardware.

Still working on one of two Sonomatic builds. As usual, the off board wiring is the most tedious part to me. I mean look at all those wires!

I just cleaned the back with IPA:

And earlier I used a dremel to cut off the screw shaft that gets in the way of the output jack and sanded off the rough edges. This project is quite involved.

Edit: please don’t judge my dremel skills, this was the first time using it so I didn’t really know what I was doing. Any tips are appreciated in fact!

Could have finished it up tonight, but adulting is getting in the way. Glad I went with mint. Had to do some routing for the neck pup since the asshat before me decided not to finish what they started and just drilled extra pickguard holes and install it crooked to fit the pup that they didn’t even hook up😑

Thank you soooo much for sharing this picture. I had also just finished my build of this pedal and it sounded like crap. GUESS WHAT? The color of LED you use makes a huge difference in this build. I did not look that closely at the BOM. But after seeing this picture with the yellow LED....(i was like meh, I'll just throw a red one in there...BIG MISTAKE)). Yellow LED is now installed. All better now.
