What's a good clean (no fuzz) octave down for bass?

I've just been hipped to the notion of OCTAVE DOWN for bass.

Problem is, all my octave machines add dirt. Is there anything clean for bass that isn't digital (i.e is buildable?)

Thanks Jimilee. I added Ocelet and Octarock to my cart before posting, but I suspect the fuzz can't be disabled on the Octarock. Still researching. (The Octamizer looks intriguing, but not traced anywhere AFAIK.)

The 2nd octave down of the Ocelot is probably useless for bass, so ideally I'd find a 1 octave down + 1 octave up that tracks well with bass, but if not, the 1 octave down on the Ocelot will suffice.

I forgot about this one, I’ve built it as well.

A brilliant legendary circuit worth considering is the Downtown Fuzz (you can turn off the fuzz) :

It has a very good fuzz that you can blend with the clean signal, or turn off, a tone pot shaping the octaves sounds. 3 octaves down if needed, and a powerful bass boost toggle. If you dial the octave's tone around 10', with bass boost activated and the fuzz, it gets quickly amazing. The walls are shaking. It's more precise with only one octave down, with 2 or 3 you start to have a much more noticeable octave effect. Good tracking, can be a bit glitchy but it's part of the charm. It's glitchy in a good way.

Octave sound are synthy, I'd say it's more suitable than other octavers to blend with a fuzz or an other gain circuit. Also useful if you look to add an octave down to a clean signal, but it sounds synthetic compared to other octaver circuits like Up, Down Daddy. Synthetic sounds really good too, but not the same as other octavers.

Amazing, both with bass and guitars.

You guys are an amazing fount of knowledge. Thanks for giving me so much to research.
I already googlesearched the fuck out of this topic and you still came up with new ideas for me. 🤘

For future travelers, here's a nice shootout of a few.
I don't agree with his some of his assessments, (the EHX Multiplexer sounds great to me) so listen with headphones.

The second octave is pretty common for dubby synth tones on bass. The first octave is the classic Tony Levin Sledgehammer tone

I think I'm going for Levin, at least for recording. Usually, I want the effect to be not overtly noticeable by the average music listener. But I'll give that 2nd octave a try to see for myself. Could be ear-opening.

I forgot about this one, I’ve built it as well.
Thank you. I'm now on the waitlist for this one. Since Madbean's Lowrider is discontinued, this seems a good alternative.

DOD Meatbox if you want control over your bass frequencies down to deep subs. It goes about it differently than the standard 4013 circuits, and has really wide EQ options and serious balls.
Meatbox looks fantastic.
Gotta try it just for something different. If I can find a non-counterfeit M51134p, I'm all over this.

The Parasit U-235 is amp great clean suboctave too. The middle mode is especially rad
Middle position (!!!) could inspire some interesting basslines. PCB also at Smallbear.

Very intriguing. Another one I hadn't heard of.

Thanks again guys. I love that there's not one clear answer to this question.

Bricks, I understand you have multiple Meatboxen.
Are internet rumours that "the reissues don't track as well as the originals" fact? or bunk?
Are the subharmonic ICs labeled the same? (If none of yours are original FX32, just disregard.)

Right now the meatbox is the only thing giving me a really thick boner, being a different topology from all the PLL variants.
U-235 also for detuned mode.

Does anyone know how the second output on the original Meatbox is connected?
I built one on stripboard that matches the Lectric-FX schematic.

I didn't like it as a straight up octave pedal, but using a separate splitter with a direct line going into the board, sounds massive.
