What's in the mailbox? 📬 📦

Woohoo....just got these in the mail today. Popped them in my VHT D50, re-biased and they sound really good. Much better than the Ruby's that came in the amp. This set of Tung Sol's are much better matched than the Ruby's that were allegedly matched.

I've got the Mullards in V1 and V2 and a JJ in V3 for the phase inverter. The Mullard in V1 has a bit more sparkle than the Bugle Boy I had in there. But still has the warmth and "3D" ness of the vintage tube. If I can track down an NOS RCA for V1 that doesn't cost an arm and leg I might try that next.

Nice! What speaker(s) do you have paired with the amp?

Edit: apologies...you've probably already said and I missed it.

I'm going direct into the Torpedo into my interface. But my physical cab is an Avatar 1x12 with a V30 in it. It sounds good with this amp but not so much with my Frenzel for some reason.

I just recorded a demo for a pedal with the amp and new tubes. Stay tuned. rendering.......

Phillips and Sylvania don’t command the RCA prices, but it’s changing amazingly fast. The last time I ordered preamp tubes was 8 or 9 months ago, and I was able to get NOS JAN Phillips for about 60% of what they were listed at last week.

For 12AX7s, I’ve been using 7025s, and really like them. If you can go with a lower mu (which really works great sometimes), 5751s are also a nice substitute.

The reason I noticed tube prices last week was needing new rectifiers for a dynaco amp I’m rebuilding. Wanting to do whatever I can to avoid shipping charges, and the 20% knob sale at Tubes and more, I was able to get knobs for most of the current pedals I’m finishing up. The Davies are mostly on spec for me though; I’m sure I’ll find a good home for them.

They’re also my go to place for jewel lights and toggle covers.

I’ve never tried the Pvanne rectifiers before; but the reviews were very positive. They are about 3/4 the size I’m used to though. I had planned on using some RCAs I have in the attic, but then I saw what they are worth, and I think I may just keep them for something special. In any case, I’m still aways from getting the dynaco rebuilt; I’ve got everything pretty much ready, except I just decided to build a whole new chassis for it. I use Sylvania tubes whenever I can. My grandma worked there from 1954-1973 making tubes

Itsy bitsy bench power supply came today. The universal yardstick, the bic, for scale. You could probably fit 5 of these in the space of the power supply its replacing. Gonna test output ripple and play around with it tonight, fingers crossed it’s not a lemon. Added bonus is the USB-C PD that can power my soldering irons!

hmmm.... I'm not sure, but when I started in 71 it was $8 to $10.... but it was CCCRRRAAAPPP. Leaves, zero bud. I didn't even know what bud was till I started growing in 72.

From crap leaves/stems but no bud to a year later growing your own...

That escalated quickly!

I didn’t have time to check the ripple on my scope but importantly this one doesn’t briefly output a negative voltage on startup before reaching the set voltage like a lot of other cheap bench power supplies do. Once I bust out the scope I’ll try to do a little write up about it. USB PD at 20V had my iron up to 350 in about 5 seconds. On this listing there's a review where someone measured the ripple at 300mV peak to peak but also doesn't specify the load. There's also some mixed reviews and reports of failure on the EEVBlog forums. Nevertheless, I don't really have the bench space for anything bigger so we'll see how it fares.

Cool! Where'd you find that?

I bought it from Dragon model on AliExpress for $80, but there are a lot of other listings for $75 now. It's called the ToolkitRC P200. It's also on Amazon for $115, but I didn't mind waiting 3 weeks to get it.
