I've been on a bass pre amp trip lately and would absolutely build any pre y'all collaborate on.You tell me!So far Robert and I only discussed doing one with a fuller feature set (HPF/Bass/Mids/Resonant LPF probably), but he is welcome to provide boards for any of my open source widgets and you guys are welcome to work out what format and component choices you prefer in any case. Since my main thing is onboard electronics I have a pretty strong preference for SMD opamps at the very least, just because the vast majority of the good sounding low current ones only seem to come that way. But SO-8 to DIP 8 converters are a cheap and easy enough way to work around that as long as there's room for the adapter to physically fit in the build. I've gone that route in a few DIY amp builds with nary a problem so far.
FWIW, the only other SMD parts besides the two opamps on that pictured board are 1206 size resistors, which I can hand solder with even a standard 1.6mm tip pretty easily, although I'd recommend a 1.2 mm screwdriver tip. They come in 0.1% tolerance by default and are fairly hard to break, but they are considerably more expensive for sure. Just getting comfortable with getting them out of the factory packaging and finding the right tweezer config was the biggest learning curve for me, and I actually greatly prefer working with them over through hole resistors by now.
But will they fit in a 1590A?What was supposed to be in the mailbox... some PCB's from JLCPCB for some cool new circuits...
What actually came (which seems to be a mix-up at their shipping repackager)... Some fancy frilly women's jeans and tank tops. I am a little bummed to say the least...![]()
It's ok Dan, this is the 2020's you don't have to hide your proclivities and clothing preferences anymore..........What was supposed to be in the mailbox... some PCB's from JLCPCB for some cool new circuits...

I ordered some of PW's open source thru hole project boards from OshPark. They should be here this week.I've been on a bass pre amp trip lately and would absolutely build any pre y'all collaborate on.
They won't, and thats what I'm most mad about! But will they fit in a 1590A?
Ha, it wouldn't be so bad if it fit either my wife or daughter, but alas, it won't fit anyone in the familyIt's ok Dan, this is the 2020's you don't have to hide your proclivities and clothing preferences anymore..........![]()
I was looking at that same tool for the knobs! I have the same issue i hate it when the knobs are off!$75 doesn’t go as far as I remembered
Thankfully I had a gift card burning a hole in my pocket.
Some trash can knobs for a fun little fuzz box I’ve had planned for a long time; colored footswitch dress nuts for a few different builds; a pair of fancy aluminum knobs for the echo foxtrot (when I eventually get around to doing that one); colored mini mirror-top knobs for the terrarium and maybe my redshift phaser; tiny MXR knobs for the fv-1 dev box; a better setter since I have OCD and it bothers me to no end when my knobs are half a degree off
I often think about how disappointed and confused someone would be receiving one of our parts orders.I mean, I'm bummed, but I imagine the lady (or dude, whatever) opening her package looking as all those boards going "what in the hell are these?!?"
Isn’t that the way these days, trying to squeeze a 1590xx a$$, I mean circuit, into a 1590a jeans, I mean boxes…….But will they fit in a 1590A?
Awesome, I look forward to the build report. I might have to order one up. I kind of forgot that was an option. I've never ordered anything from OshPark. I appreciate all the generosity from the design gurus up in this place. I would do the same were I to have a good idea.I ordered some of PW's open source thru hole project boards from OshPark. I'm planning to build two of them for acoustic instruments (one is for a buddy that has an acoustic open mic gig) and build one as a Bass Preamp for my fledgling bass career![]()
@Passinwind assures me that the bass spec version will make me play just like Jaco.....
Cool. You’re welcome to come out here and try a few sometime if you’re so inclined. And if you’re comfortable with soldering relatively easy SMDs I’d recommend at least waiting for the new design to go live, which might even happen as soon as tonight. I’ll have a couple of new alt specs for the older one posted very soon too, just waiting on a little more beta tester feedback before I slog through the BOM drill.I've been on a bass pre amp trip lately and would absolutely build any pre y'all collaborate on.
