It is a way to conceal the value, easier than goop or paint.

But it clearly failed, I can clearly see that's a 5.

The real trick is to paint 1, 2 and 3 on the other capacitors to make you wonder what happened to 4. That will drive anyone trying to trace it mad, and my secret is safe!

I tried that on one of my builds I suspected would be copied, but the electrolytics kept popping open so I had to give up on the whole project.
Nobody gonna steal that particular circuit-idea of mine.
