What's your current headache?

I'm trying to come up with a new pedalboard to play out with, as my small one just isn't big enough to fit all the pedals I need for the band. The headache is that none of the commercially available boards are a size I like.

I can build one out of wood, but then I need to design it as a flight case with a top. My pedals are all different sizes and I'm having a hard time coming up with one board design that will work with everything, in any configuration. I may end up building 3 different boards with different dimensions.

What size are you looking for?

I’ve eyeballed the Hands boards before- they’re really pretty and have nice looking cases

I understand this completely although in a different context. Every time I go to make a pedal board, none of the commercially available ones within my cheap ass price point fit the bill ether to big or to small. And left with building one, that brings me to another problem my ideas change so much I never spend enough time in one configuration to justify actually fabricating a board because in all actuality I build a signal chain, it stays on the desk for a little bit and don’t really do any stomping. And I always seem to end up with only three basic effects OD, chorus and delay. And a handful of loose pedals continually migrating around the room. At this point I’m so broke I can’t even pay attention let alone stay on topic… what were we talking about again?

Friggin beetles!

We have these non native Lacebark Elm trees and about 10 years ago or so we had this influx of elm beetles that just spawn this time of year. Unlike ponderosa pine bark beetles, these ones don't destroy the elm trees (wish they did…), but even pest control doesn't fully take care of them.

Those elm trees are a nuisance unto themselves… we nicknamed them devil trees , because the dang things sprout everywhere like weeds, and they cover the ground like snow with their seed pods …and smells faintly of fatulence…

I'm also cheap, that's the problem. I'm looking for something in the Pedaltrain Metro 20 size, maybe a bit deeper idk. I like building them because I can put the pedals in the back on a second tier.

I made one today that's 18" x about 10", dual tier, with the front tier 5" deep and the back one 4". So the front row can fit anything up to a 125b comfortably and the back row is idealized for horizontal 1590bb, but can fit deeper pedals as well. But with this one I made the back tier tall enough to tuck the jacks from the front row underneath, which means it's pretty tall.

I think tomorrow I'll try to make one maybe 20" x 8, with the front row 5" and the back row 2.5" (think horizontal 125b or 1590b), and also shorter. I'm realizing I just need to make a bunch of them so I can try it out - same with building the pedals themselves

Wait what? You have fart trees?
 
I sucked it up today and fixed my problem

Came out pretty decent. It's 22x10.5" I tried using Sande plywood from home depot and it was ok but very soft. My clamp left a dent on the back. Maybe next time I'll try something else. I made it so it will be easy to make a matching top for it so it will be its own case.

Maybe next time I'll try a more durable hardwood, like cherry or maple

No filler needed. It’s void free. And unlike sanded finish ply which is just pine plywood with a thin veneer of hardwood on the faces, all the layers in the Baltic stuff is birch.

It would take paint fine, but I also like the look of the edges just sanded. I used to make chairs out of it
