New JHS Pedal Announcement

I don’t really get the JHS hate you see online, the guy starts with mods and clones (like most of us) then scales it up and his real skill is branding and creating a fairly desirable product.
Then does YouTube (branding again) and tries lots of stuff in quite a slick convincing way that I guess sells and does what he wants it to. I imagine he has a couple of electrical engineers on payroll - but he’s never going to be like some visionary pedal builder who creates utterly new things - he’s a geek like most of this forum who gets to do geeky pedal stuff and do whatever and not offshore the manufacturer . Not much to hate there other than a certain level of bland reliability of product and suspicion he gets to have more fun in his job than I do in mine…

(Disclaimer- I own a colourbox v2, I looked inside and no I can’t trace that!)

He gets hate because he's ripped off the DIY community without acknowledging or giving back to it (Superbolt, Lizard Queen, probably something else I'm forgetting). He also ripped off Devi Ever for his Bun Runner and tried to get her blacklisted from stores. That was years ago, but some people still remember. Shit move even if Devi turned out to be a shithead as well.

I think it’s sounds cool. Makes me think of the distortion on something like Zappa’s Freak Out or The Fugs.

But I don’t see myself using that much. I’ll wait a few years for the pedal that emulates a peaked out soundblaster pro card.

By any chance, do you also trust the government? 😂🥴🤣

That’s what I mean - everyone is a bit of a shithead, nothing is original and there’s loads of companies that rip off the diy communities and get talked about in hushed tones. Most things are based on other things with a few changes, I’m sure most have us bought pcbs ‘based on’ other things, the diy community is different than 15-20 years back and most of us were knobs when we were younger… I guess I can’t be bothered to hate on a company and get bored with it.

That entirely depends on the government and what country you’re in!

I personally feel that part of it is the JHS Youtube channel and the way he's positioned himself as a "pedal historian". If some random company came out with the Lizard Queen and called it their own unique circuit not based on anything, we would roll our eyes and ignore it just as "business as usual" - because it really is common.

But when he does videos on other pedals and explains what they are based on behind the marketing BS, and then comes out with something that really plays into his "pedal history" niche (Escobedo and all the things they put out, even if not necessarily commercially widespread, are very, very well known in the DIY community and thus also important in a sense), they just ignore all that and call it a "unique design" of their own.

That just feels so hypocritical that it has caused the backlash there. And it's hard to see why they wouldn't just lean into it, it could be a pretty cool marketing angle to take too - and they could put out interesting Youtube videos on the DIY community and all they've produced. Well, at least interesting to HC pedal nerds, maybe not the average guitar player?

All that being said, I don't hate JHS, I just don't really like them and don't feel like supporting them. But I do think hating on companies is an important part of keeping capitalism in check, and if you stop doing that widely then you get... well, that whole thing *gestures at the US*.
