Tom Scholz Hyperspace

I heard @Robert mention an FV-1 based hyperspace in a wah shell in another thread. I have almost posted a Hyperspace wishlist thread before but chickened out several times. But since it got mentioned I figured I might as well post it. I think Tom Scholz used a modded echoplex to build the original Hyperspace for the Boston albums but FV-1 PCB in a wah shell seems like the logical modern way to accomplish that sound. After the Hyperspace... maybe DIY versions on the Rockman rack modules. Proposition PCB is one my favorites but I want to go deeper down this rabbit scholez...

I think half the demos here do so much better. Get to the point. Play a few notes and move on. STFU and quit wanking. Obviously I'm not cut out for either a marketing position or being remotely involved in podcasts.

I think it's a reverb or multitap delay with a continuously adjustable clock frequency. As you raise the clock speed while it's reverberating, it causes that pitch shifting and hyperspace-y sounds. I can get vaguely similar sounds by adjusting the delay time on the fly while the repeats are going. It helps that the delay time pot is under my fingers on the guitar. I do think it would work better with a reverb.

You had me with "... I want to go deeper down this rabbit scholez..." 😹

There is a video somewhere where Scholz shows how the real hyperspace works.

It's a modified echoplex with a mechanical multi-axis expression pedal. One axis physically moves the record head.

This is the only clip I can find of the one I built... this was a sort of last minute addition to an expression based sustainer I built for a friend.
