If unagi is making multi tap inductors are we going to see a sushi take on a pultec in the future?

Id love to see some affordable mic input and output transformers. I've been wanting to build some Jensen twin servo type preamps but I just cant afford the xformers at the moment.

At this point I have more pedals than I need and really just want to build microphones and outboard gear. That stuff gets expensive fast

I actually did a Pultec as a pedal a few years ago and was kind of underwhelmed with it on bass and guitar, but I have been wondering if it would have been better as a mic preamp. I think I still have it around somewhere, maybe I'll dig it up and try it.

I've actually been headed down the studio gear rabbit hole quite a bit myself lately. Anything I do as far as mic pres etc. will likely be a Sushi Box product that I sell as a finished unit, but when I do get that far the intention is to have Unagi Magnetics input and output transformers so I'm not paying absurd amounts for the others that are out there.

I'm not quite there yet, but I do have some mic input/output transformer specs I'm sitting on, I just need to send them over to the factory and they'll start working on samples for me. When I have them verified I'm sure they will also make it over to the Unagi lineup for sale to anyone that wants them.

Awesome!

I'm on the edge of moving and starting to build out my studio. I'm guessing it'll be about a two-three year process to get it in a state im happy with starting with treatment, then speakers, then outboard gear.

I've become so much better of a builder in the past year and have started making my own designs and fabing PCBs. By the time I need preamps, I expect to be much better at designing and will be greatful for affordable high quality parts!

Just a quick heads up for everyone, I'm going to be on vacation June 25 through July 21, and while some PCBs are running a little low, I will not be restocking until I get home, so if something runs out before I leave, it's just going to be out for a bit.

Also, in case it wasn't clear, I will not be accepting orders during this period. You don't want to wait a month for your order to ship, and I don't want to come home to a month's worth of orders piled up.

Have a great holiday Nathan and the Sushi clan, I have been wondering about getting some C2CE PCB's so you get some more pocket money for your holiday.
If you take them camping there won't be any shops for the girls to look in, those shops can be a wallet killer.

I'm not much of a camping dude, but the good news is we'll be in a country where the kids don't speak the language, so it will be harder for them to do any shopping without mom or dad translating.

So there wont be any really colourful local clothing that would grab the girls attention ? No local markets you might have to walk through with the girls ?
If I was going where I think you are going I would bring a spare suitcase for stuff that I would end up buying, never mind what young (and not so young) females would want to get.
Whats the name for that money sewer that sucks up money ? Ah....souvenirs I think is the word, and that does not include scarves and other soft things that can be worn.
Now for the serious question, what sort of local instruments can you get there and how are you going to bring them all home with you ?

I would love to see a SUNN model T preamp, wait....maybe a Marshall Plexi 59, or a Marshall JCM45, or a Fender 5F8-A Twin Amp..........
Hmmmm.....they are basically the same circuit but with different component values.
Perhaps one PCB with several BOM's depending on which amp you want to build, I would up for buying multiple PCB's at one time if you get a slight discount for more quantity. $20-one, $35-two, $50-three.
But I would prefer a switch to switch from the Bright channel to the Normal channel, I don't like having triodes that are not used, unless they are used as an extra pre-gain boost feature.
Well I will just keep dreaming, one day they might come true.
Cheers
Mick

I don't know if you would need the pentode in the circuit, the 200S had a 6AN8 pentode/triode combination tube after the tonestack but we would not need the triode part of the 6AN8 for a preamp pedal. Just have to find a good replacement tube for the pentode.
f you don't need the pentode then it is just a 12AX7 tube and a fairly easy circuit

I know you said you weren't looking at Bogner circuits but a pedal sized Fish pre would be insanely cool. Maybe a Soldano X88 or SP77?

Working on finishing my wrecking ball and looking forward to that one.

A pedal-sized version of a multi-channel rackmount preamp would certainly be exciting. Eventually I'll have to just put things in rackmount boxes.

I have probably had more requests for a multi-channel high-gain preamp than anything else at this point though. Something has to happen eventually.

Oh for sure and that’s a major project. I guess I meant something like a single channel from one of those in a pedal sized box kind of like the wrecking ball but hey, if you’re going to do rack preamps that’s exciting too!

Yeah single channel in a pedal form is certainly more doable. But with the number of requests I've had for a new dual-channel project, I figure I'll need to find something. Looking at specific requests I think I've seen more requests for something 5150 flavored than anything.
