‘OD808HW’, quad opamp 808, swollen pickle [Vero]

just thought i'd share a few builds i've done semi-recently...

so there’s the TS808HW…. but what about an ‘OD808HW’?
‘handwired’, of course must be better 🤪

but really, i just think tagboard builds are cool, so here’s what i came up with…

(schematic)

enormous oversized caps were hilarious and dumb to squeeze in the 1590BB2, it sounds exactly the same as a veroboard version i did previously, but made for a satisfying build. this is now my main overdrive.
i’d love to do it again if i could find some smaller tagboards..

OD808 - QUAD OPAMP VERSION (TL074)

another question that absolutely nobody was asking...
but then i pondered, what if the OD808 was based on a quad opamp instead of x2 dual opamps?…..

layout:

build:

B4507784-00F5-4AA1-9F0E-A1C74487D040.jpeg

there was no reason to do this. of course it sounds the same as a normal dual opamp version.
but i had fun attempting to draft a layout that could squeeze into an altoids tin, and it even worked first go. can’t believe i didn’t make any errors.
there’s something satisfying about having a single opamp in a build like this (was initially inspired by an OD-1 build)

WAY HUGE SWOLLEN PICKLE MKII

i hadn’t built a fuzz yet and this one looked really nifty, so i found this layout:

build:

2D28D132-639B-450A-B61D-8697279D8B8E.jpeg

im not that familiar with fuzz circuits, but holy crap I never expected a fuzz pedal to add so much bottom end, it's like a bass button / doom-boom button (especially when stacked with an overdrive, as i noticed knocked loose does with some of their riffs).
no fancy parts here either, just x4 2N3904 transistors, and it doesnt matter if they match, sounds great either way.
cool pedal 🤙

here’s a lil demo of the OD808HW stacking with the swollen pickle:

Cool stuff indeed!

Makes me want to build a bunch of turret-board pedals, all with metal-can op-amps.

I'm sure there's other metal-can ICs out there...

I'm stealing your turret-layout! Please.

Someday I'll use it.

I'd heard of people sticking headphone amps in Altoids tins, but I've never seen the tins myself in real life (Fisherman's Friend tins up here, and I guess they're a lot smaller tins than Altoids). That's a BIG cool Altoid collection, nonetheless my eye keeps being drawn back to the amp-like gutshot of the 808! Beautiful, so beautiful.

i can give you the full res pdf if you like. just gotta export a copy from the diylc file.

thanks 🤙 that's the thing about tagboard builds, and even vero/strip builds to a degree, to me it seems embracing the ridiculous oversized-ness kinda 'showcases' the components in circuit, and then it can become more art than circuit, especially if you can get hold of pretty components. i guess that's why i'll always go for larger oversized greencaps over MKT if i can fit them, just cos i love the 'old-school' vibe/charm of big greencaps. same with axial electrolytics. can't really bring myself to use carbon film or carbon comp resistors though (low noise is more important to me). i could (should) have gone harder on the aesthetics and used the larger prettier blue 1W metal films (or grey 1W metal oxides) to really complete the look, but i guess the 1/2W are ok..

the boards+wiring looked a fair bit tidier before i made about 420 varying attempts to squeeze it into the 1590BB2, it got a bit messy towards the end.... (i was absolutely determined not to resign to using a 1590XX - an ipad sized 808 would be beyond silly)

I'm totally in agreement. Good call on the size of the enclosure, and on the choice of metal resistors. I like mojo, but not at the expense of a cruddy signal to noise ratio.
