Aion sale - Sep 2022

Here's what's on it's way to me-

Forgot to take the Redshift out of my cart, and didn't realize it until I got the shipping notification. Not a bad phaser (I've built a couple in the past) but it's just kinda meh compared others I already have.

Gonna try to fit the Spectron, Obelisk, and Monolith all in a single enclosure :ROFLMAO:

I considered a similar plan with my spectron, only it was a green muff on a fuzzdog fuzzpup. Ultimately I was underwhelmed by it in testing so I left it out.

I figure having the LoveFromUnda will be a nice foil to my Gas Tank / Bronx Cheer / Green Ronger / Junk Trunk build. And it'll give me a couple more dort options without taking up too much more space

OK, what did you all buy?
Give me stuff to research and/or make me jealous that I avoided this sale through sheer willpower. (It felt both a victory and a defeat.)
Eclipse- SDD-3000 preamp. Planning on putting it in a loop with whatever is the most sterile digital delay I can find for some tasty 80s Lifeson tones.

Also got HM-2, FZ-2 and FZ-3 boards since they’re all sorta shoegaze staples and I came up with an idea for a shoegaze album recently

Definitely feels like victory and defeat. I made it through both Aion and here with nothing. Willpower sucks.

It took a LOT of willpower.
I woke up this morning after the sale was ostensibly over, and it let me add a Lithium (Small Clone) to my cart at the sale price around 8:30 a.m.

I resisted. Work distracted me till 3 p.m. Went to see if I could still checkout, but the price was back to full price. I am ridiculous (i.e. thinking about it twice after the sale ended.) Yeah, willpower sucks. But it'll still be there if I run out of things to build.

Love shoegaze. Hope you make some magic.

I’ll be sure to post when I have it all recorded. It’s one of dozens of albums I have in various states of completed arrangement that need recording, so who knows when I’ll actually get it done. It’s a pretty ambitious project— I won’t say too much, but it incorporates elements of folk, modal jazz, and pop, and mashes them thru reverbs and fuzzes for the ultimate shoegaze experience. Vacuum cleaner noises will be plentiful.

FZ-2?? My first thought "A Frank Zappa 2 pedal?" LOL. Anyway, thanks. This is what I get for asking. Promethium Distortion is now on my wishlist. ♥

Haha! I’ve got quite a few Zappa pedals in the works, but I’m always too lazy to do the graphics for them. The fz-2 won’t have Zappa themed graphics, but it’ll have some fun stuff going on

I saw the sale prices at Aion lasted until yesterday afternoon, I think. I kept checking. Had the Ts 50 Bass Preamp been in stock, we would not be having this conversation.

I had to keep telling myself, "you have enough PCBs, build them first". Luckily, Stompbox Parts is about to take care of my need to spend some money.

Do share! I've looked this route before to avoid carving up guitars to add on-board eq/boosts.

I was only really after the TS-50 Bass Preamp (Traynor TS-50B), which was already out of stock.

So I got these to console myself:

Sunstone (EHX SmallStone, which IIRC I already have a PCB of from another vendor — I try to avoid redundancy)
VH Drive Channel (Ampeg VH-140C, so I can circuit-bend it to Ampeg B12 spec, for bass... should be a doddle to do so)
Elysium (Ibanez EM5 Echo Machine, because my collection of Sound Tank clones wouldn't be complete... wait, what? It's not a PT2399 IC?)
Lithium (EHX SmallClone, have other PCBs for this... must've got mixed up with my online meds order — never order PCBs while ordering BPCs)
DZ4 Preamp (Diezel VH-4, got this 'cause it'll be great on bass, right? Maybe I can force it to be so, 'cause I don't have enough projects to fill up my tinker-time)
Calliope (*Don't know how/why, already got Harmonic Percolator PCBs from nearly every PCB supplier. May as well get PPCB's now too)
I've got just about every AION I want, mostly during 20% off sales, a few from 15% sales etc... so naturally I've got a few I didn't want.

As I said Binary and Comet, only boards think my other current option is perfboarding.. and rather stick with easy stuff like test circuits and voltage adjustments for my combo ideas...

Oh dang. I just listened to samples of the Rusty Box.

Now I wanna build a TS-50 too.

I use my TB-50 all the time, usually direct into a mic pre to juice up bass synth lines or into the fx return of a bass amp for E bass. In my opinion that's where it really shines. It sounds cool going into the front of the amp but I find that running a preamp into a preamp can get a little smeary for me, even with modest amounts of gain.

I've been reconfiguring and trying a bunch of stuff and find my favorite sound so far is putting it on my board at the end of my dirt section. All of my pedals are in the fx loop of a radial bassbone pre. Radial into the fx return on my amp. Technically this is 2 preamps but the radial is just evening things out between 2 instruments. This seems like it doesn't get as loud as plugging in to the front of the amp can but sounds much clearer.
I also like that it simplifies the controls down to the 5 knobs on the pedal, though I do miss the mute and pad buttons on the front panel. I'm not sure what "smeary" means but TS - 50 into the front of the ampeg was my least favorite sound.

Prettt much my findings. I thought in front of the SVT it just didn't work. That preamp has so much character and an inherant eq curve that putting another heavily shaped sound like the tb50 into it didn't vibe. When the sound is getting nudged back and forth through different EQ's w severe curves and multiple saturators it loses focus and tends to sound hollow and phasey, or "smeary."
