Farty Mids

Does anyone know the hz # for farty Mids that are created when distorting a guitar?

I've searched every which way to just get a range of numbers and I've come up with nada.

Yeah it's a conundrum. I've modded my Fender HRDX and put in an Eminence RW&B speaker. Did wonders, but still have a guitar (even changed pickups to P90s) that sounds farty when overdriven, and I set my drives pretty low.

Interested in picking up a Jupiter Ceramic speaker just for different flavors, just wanted to know the frequency hz number to look out for which doesn't focus on farty Mids, since I've been comparing frequency response curves on different speakers. Just trying to understand "keywords" better like "warm mids"/"aggressive mids" to know what to look out for.

Done the EQ pedal route and didn't have that great of results either.

Replaced caps with F&T's, replaced 5w resistors, and also copied all the mods from the Fromm HRDX mod kit.

Never had a farty guitar tone, unless Velcro fuzz counts.
Now, for congested mids, cut any unneeded lowend as those harmonics will clutter the mids. Also try an EQ in the loop if available. High Q cut in the 220-420hz region.
If you have a parametric, do the seek and destroy method. Boost first, high/narrow q, and sweep until you find the culprit, then cut.

@jwin615 nice man. I have an Equilux Mini, so I can try giving that a swirl. Your recommendations are what I'm looking for, numbers to work with, even though I have always been beyond horrid with math/numbers. At least they're for the most part definitive.

I don't get how it's happening, all pedals have bass set very low or cut, treble always past midway, tone knob on guitar always past 5, bass set low on amp.......kick on low gain overdrive and the guitar farts instead of screams.

Working a side job to buy a Helix Stomp and a Laney FRFR, so heading down the modeling road in the future to ride all those fun tone roads.

Any recommendations on any other EQ PCBs to check out from PPCB?

the fromel kits are mostly adaptations of the billm mods for blues juniors translated over to the hrd/deville

I still don't know what you mean by fart. Just no oomph, lost the mix stuff?
I could be the resonant frequency of your cab as alluded to. Especially if it's the combo as they are pretty tight judging by images. Do you have any other speaker you can plug into?
Or maybe have a rear panel you can remove/add? That could possibly help some.
OR even a headphone/line output(into phones)?

I'm out to supper before going to see Asia play. I'll put up some sound samples tomorrow, would greatly appreciate any advice. I'm flying solo on this endeavor and have nobody to bounce ideas off of. Once you hear what I'm talking about, you'll get it.

Just don’t record your farts. We don’t want to hear it.
Or maybe some do: I’m not here to judge.

Usually the farts are caused by low frequencies. Fender amps, being designed for Fender guitars, often have a lot of low end which can create havoc with any sort of distortion.

I don't know that I've heard of farty mids though. If you want to get "vocal" mids 800-1000Hz seems to be the area to aim for. Are some strings or notes creating this fartiness which bothers you? I've spent way too much of my life trying to get rid of farty low string distortion. I've discovered a whole world of remedies for that.

If you have recently replaced your speaker that could be part of the problem. But you imply that that it has helped... I generally stick with Celestion speakers because I have fewer issues with them than with any other brand. Eminence can be a bit hit and miss. But really we need a bit more info. Which overdrive is it which is causing this sound? Guitars? Decent quality leads?

So, here's my problem. This is a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe amp. I've changed out the capacitors, put in a new speaker, replaced the tubes, biased new tubes to 69 ;), done all the Fromm mods, and I still can't figure out this problem. The distortion just sounds absolutely terrible. The audio example is of the amp's distortion channel, although every distortion/overdrive/fuzz pedal sounds the exact same. It's killing me that I can't figure out this problem, so hoping someone here may recognize this issue through the audio clip. I start strumming chords at :53 and it sounds ultra horrible then. Something is wrong with this amp and I can't figure it out.

I turned up the distortion and master just to make the crappy distortion easier to hear, it happens at every level, changing the EQ does absolutely nothing.
