film capacitors

is it just me or is it very difficult to source film capacitors and they are much more expensive than any other components even transformers are much easier to source

Where are you located and where have you tried to source them from? I find film caps to be pretty straight forward to find. Absolutely everything is on Mouser and Tayda’s selection is also very good. Though if you’re looking for WIMAs or other name brands you’ll only be able to get some of them from Tayda.

There are variety kits on Amazon that probably aren’t the highest quality but they’ll do the trick for the vast majority of hobby projects and are probably better than what was in most of the much coveted vintage pedals.

If in the US: Mouser first, then maybe Digikey, Newark, Arrow, certain well vetted eBay vendors, etc. Buying in bulk quantities brings pricing down substantially, and you do need to look at spec sheets carefully to make sure you get the right footprint. The Mouser search engine takes some getting used to, IME it often works better if you get the exact part number off the manufacturer's website and try entering that in both Google and the Mouser search engine.

in the US i look all over wherever they pop up

Yeah, those WIMA MKS2 are mainly what I had been buying for film caps lately, after encountering them in Aion’s handy Mouser BOMs.

Feels weird. Like the end of an era. I don't like it, even though I've been using less and less Wima caps in my builds.

Some might actually be harder to find going forward.

Just saw this posted on another forum:
Thanks for the heads-up, I managed to miss the end of life notice Mouser presumably sent me. I've been getting way too many of those notices over the last few years! I threw in a quick order for 100 of my most used size but that won't last me all that long, and then I may have to revamp quite a few board layouts and go to something blue or gray, Jah forbid.

Grays are Kemet, right? I know I’ve used some blues, but can’t remember who makes them…

Anyone know if the competing brands use the same materials and are likely to have similar shortages/discontinuations?

EPCOS/TDK for polyester, Kemet PHE426 for polypro. I've been using the latter in 1nf-68nF for many years, not so much in bigger sizes for typical coupling applications though.
