Nice boots!

Also, law of nature: if a kid can get a cold, they will. We’ve been through what feels like every $&@! ing cold possible this fall and early winter. Like where the hell does my kid get these viruses? Somebody sneezed into their sleeve 40miles away - oh shit! Lol.

We're pretty isolated. This is only her second illness ever and we're all having a bad time

Man, my kids had two colds (or flu or whatever) in the last two months, plus I got covid and the same cold and my wife the same cold and a sinus infection… the last few months have sucked! So I feel you.

I feel you. I've had like 2 1/2 weeks off work and at least one of us (me, my wife, and my daughter) has been sick the entire time. I've currently got a head cold and my daughter has a cough.

This "vacation" has been harder than real life by far. I'm run completely ragged at this point.

I noticed that I tend to get sick as soon as I get some time off. My immune system literally crashes! That’s just dumb.

I had an upper respiratory infection a month ago and still wheezing and hacking, haven't had a bout with asthma in years until I had COVID, now everything stirs it up!

Dude, we've done nothing this holiday due to constant virus since mid November. My wife and kids finally recovered enough to do xmas dinner at my in-laws but I had to bail myself. Boring winter has been very boring. Booooooring. You're either missing shit cause you're sick or getting sick because you went, damn.

I got way more than I deserved and have been sharing most of the stuff I got for myself in my NxD posts here.

Kids got me some exotic tea's and an infuser because I've recently had to give up coffee.....(I have Barrett's Syndrome....amongst a bunch of other maladies) . They also got me some guitar polish (MusicNomad) and a "StringStrecha" (thanks for the tip @szukalski !). Planning on trying that out today when I string up my final yet to be posted NGD Black Friday Haul post!

My wife got me this cool heated puffy vest that has a battery pack. My office is the coldest room in the house in the winter and the warmest in the summer. One of said maladies (I'm a dual cancer survivor) is that I have a hard time regulating my body temp. And when I get cold, I get bone chilling kinda cold.

I made traditional turkey dinner for just the four of us. (5 counting Bonnie the dog) We're having a larger extended family "Christmas" gathering in Jan due to everyone's schedules. But I always spatchcock my birds, made a holiday Turkey rub from fresh spices from our garden, Made my "Stuffing Muffin" recipe, whipped potatoes, giblet gravy. Even Bonnie the Westie got a little plate of Christmas turkey (much to my wife's chagrin). Bonnie was pretty funny, she managed to eat the turkey, stuffing and lick the gravy clean out of her bowl and somehow not touch the little dollop of cranberry sauce I put in there. I guess she doesn't like cranberry sauce with her turkey.

But the best part of the day was just having everyone together, my two kids still at home and FaceTiming in my eldest who lives in Cincinnati.
We traded food pics.......that's our love language...heh.
I had to reduce the acid in my coffee decades ago when I started getting GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease). I am very happy to say *it worked*.

First off the darker the bean, the less caffeine and acid. The heat destroys both, and darker beans are roasted for a longer period of time. So I always buy the darkest french roast I can find.

Second, 180f is the perfect temperature to heat water before making coffee as it gets the flavors WITHOUT the acids. Tastes better too. I know from testing that 3 minutes and 45 seconds gets 20 oz of water up to 180f in my commercial 1100 watt microwave.

Third, I mix 1/8th tsp of *fresh* baking soda (a year old won't work) with a gallon of filtered water, and this is the water I use for coffee. The baking soda neutralizes any acid that does manage to make it into your cuppa java.

Now this means you cannot use a coffee maker to make your coffee, 'cus they all go up to boiling, which ruins the flavor of the bean and makes for a VERY acidic drink. So I use a stainless steel coffee funnel, pictured at the bottom available at many online locations. I bought one just to save money on paper filters, but the first cup made me realize those paper filters were sucking the flavor out of the coffee too. Washing this in the dishwasher once a week will keep it from clogging up. Otherwise after a couple of months it takes too long to make coffee.

btw, I also use the 1/8tsp of baking soda with a gallon of koolaid, which cuts back on the citric acid so much that only 3/4 of a cup of sugar makes it sweet instead of having to use the recommended 2 cups of sugar per gallon. And if I do get heartburn, I mix one half a tsp of baking soda with 12 oz of water, and drink that AFTER the baking soda is completely dissolved. Super fast cure for heartburn, been using that for 20 years as well.

Hope this helps!!!!! I'm going to go make a cup of coffee now :)

EDITED: Oops, that's 24 ounces of water for 3:25 seconds for 180f. Brain fog......

It's funny I was off coffee for a few years. I blamed it for Gerd like symptoms i had delt with since highschool. I also got more careful about my refined sugar intake at the same time and had much improvement. Then I had kids and now I'm back on coffee harder than ever and I used to be a barista. No symptoms returned. It was either the sugar or I just grew out of it. To be clear, I'm not suggesting you should do the same, the gut is complicated. Though sugar IS the devil.
