Removing Zener diode on v1 Duocast PCB

Let me preface by saying that I've been taking my time building this thus still have the original v1 pcb.

After much forum thread perusing, I decided to remove the 15v zener diode as 1) newer builds don't include this, and 2) I realized that I put a different version than what is listed.

While I desoldered the diode, I noticed that on one end, the top black paint of the PCB had come off. My question is, is this going to cause a short of some kind? Thanks

Now I’m curious. What is the effect on sound by removing this? Why was it included on the version I built? This is the second time a Pedal has changed after I built it.
