Spell check

I think search has gotten worse too. For the first few decades of web search, effective recall has been putting together the right list of keywords to match a document. Now, it's driven by AI--keywords are converted to vectors based on AI interpretation, which are fed to an alogorithm that tries to match it to other vectors, and what comes out is totally different. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad, but 30 years of expectation of how a search should work is shattered.

The predictive text is off its rocker as well. it catches whether it’s to or too every damn time. Go figure.

And sometimes the suggestions as you type your search are most interesting. A few times I’ve checked out the website google suggested. 🤣

Tbh part of this is also all the fake websites that are just casting a wide SEO net to try and catch any traffic and deliver... ads, probably, but possibly any kind of malware or scams they can. For example searching for song lyrics for less known songs gets you 20 sites which say "Lyrics for song X!" and if you click on them, they all say "sorry, no lyrics for that song". That's a very minor case of it, if you search for any software to do task XYZ you will also find a ton of scams.

But I feel like Google search itself is just a lot worse than before, too.

Sometimes, with texting, I play a game, seeing how few letters I need to type before the correct word is suggested. Many times, it’s already there as soon as I enter the preceding word. (Aw heck, I’m even doing it now! I didn’t think to try it on forum entries before!) and even though it is amazing, I still need to go back and edit many texts and entries, because I missed the horrible flubs the spell checker makes with my less than accurate key jabs.

Ha! I do the same thing when texting!

I LOATHE the AI on google. I assume it will get better but why are they doing it now? It's embarrassingly bad. There are places where AI is potentially extremely useful. Answers on google and writing songs are NOT those places. For helping to analyse statistics it could be a boon. But it could also be a lazy way to make even worse mistakes than if you didn't use AI.

When we will learn that just because you can doesn't mean you should?
