The small things

I’ve managed to keep thee ole mower going for over 12 years now. Replaced the carb once, propel cable once, and finally was able to find rear wheel replacements. This thing has paid for itself many times over and still starts first pull every time.

Get off my lawn!

There’s nothing worse than fighting a damn lawnmower or edger when it’s 100+ degrees outside and you already don’t want to be doing it. Is that a Husqvarna mower?

I finally said at age 65 that I was tired of pushing that damn thing around a bought the Honda with the ELECTRIC STARTER, 200cc motor and powered drive. Best thousand bucks I ever spent. Plows through THICK grass without even slowing down. Goes right through the grass that would suddenly bring my old Honda to a stop. And when you let go of the handle the blade disengages without having to stop the motor.

If there was a mowing heaven, I'm in it!!!! But there isn't. Lawns mow themselves in heaven or it wouldn't be heaven!!!!! Now if I could only find self cleaning tennis shoes........

When I got married and we had our first (and only) house one of the first things I did was get rid of all lawn. As a teenager I had to mow the lawn with a crappy electric lawnmower with a long extension cable for power. Australia is not an ideal place for lawn. Lawn is one of the most labour intensive gardens you can have. So I got rid of it all and planted trees, shrubs, ground coverers, laid small areas of paving, and now that we have rebuilt the back half of the house we have a lovely large deck. No lawn anywhere.

Mind you our block is only 10 metres wide so it's easy to fill with trees. Our back yard is not much bigger than 10m x 10m and we have six trees in it. My dream is to live in a forest, so this is as close as I'll get.

I spent a few weeks in Adelaide and really was impressed with the small yards and how nicely kept they were. If I had a small yard I think I’d do the same as you. But I have a large yard and sorta enjoy the weekly mowing. It’s almost meditative spending an hour being uninterrupted.

You mow every week?

I've been lobbying for this since we bought our place in 2013. Especially the front. I long for some hardscape with raised beds for veg.

Living in Berkeley, CA—if we had a lawn, I'm not sure what our neighbors would do! I hear about the opposite situation, especially from people with HOAs, (or whatever the rules that condo communities impose are called) against not having nicely mowed lawns. I'd like a picnic blanket sized patch of grass in the back yard, to lay down on, but I don't think there's any mown lawn (residential) within at least a few blocks of here. The first few years we lived here I'd mow the weeds in the easement to keep them short, (great old school push mower), but I finally went the weed wacker way, and still do tend to that. Both our front and back yards are largely planted; my wife is an avid gardener, so beyond helping her every now and then, I just get to enjoy the flowers. (And some veggies during the summer.)

I have a Snapper Rear Engine rider. It always runs. Battery dead? It’s got a pull start too. It never breaks, but when it does you can almost always fix it with some duct tape…

Our first house didn't have a lawn (lived in the middle of the desert), but when we finally moved to a place where grass grows I went for an electric mower. No gas, no maintenance, just charge the battery and go. The only problem now is I decided I'm too old for a push mower and want to get an electric riding mower. Need to sell a few more pedals before that happens
