Value added PCBs

A suggestion for value added products. Im finding that most builds have a small of amount of hard to source parts (usually ICs and Transistors)Pedal PCB would have ability to purchase some of these parts in bulk and could include them with the PCB at a reasonable charge. I'm finding that some require purchasing a minimum of 10 items and addition shipping fees. I don't want a complete kit because I like gathering the parts locally and from Tayda etc. but I don't like having to pay $10+(after shipping) for a transistor. Also, it would be handy to mention in the build notes about hard to source parts.

I’ve found a lot of those hard to find parts he uses in @Robert ’s store front. It’s pretty handy,

What parts are you having trouble finding?

Typically it's parts like J201s, Germanium Transistors/Diodes, a few IC's,BBDs etc. I don't like have to sub a similar part when I want the real thing. I can find 99.9% of the parts locally and online and I get that some are simply no longer in production. The problem is when you need 1 or 2 transistors or ICs that you can't get from the usual suppliers, you have to order 5 or 10 of them from ebay or amazon (at marked up prices ) and pay extra shipping charges. I had one pedal that required 3 items from different sellers and cost $30 in shipping charges for $10 in parts. I also have to wait up to 30 days for delivery.

That’s pedal building, unfortunately. Things are getting harder to obtain. I try to stock up on things if I come across a deal. Like, for example, guitarpcb will put J201s on sale, so I buy 10 at a time when they are .79 each.

Yup, that's the nature of the beast. You buy a complete kit from Musikding, or you gotta go hunting.

A lot of pedals are historic and the parts they used are no longer in production, or affected by the supply chain issues.
You can restrict yourself to dual opamps and silicon diodes, and be a happy camper. Or fight the supply chain fight.

Get onto Mouser and pre-order some MMBFJ201, they're in production and due in August..

I can only guarantee one thing. No matter how thorough, as soon as you commit to an order, you will find a single part which you need.. and it's too late..

I try to make less common parts available when they're obtainable.

We have J201s, 5457s, 5458s, etc. I have the tiny microswitch for the ADHD, the CH341 for the FV-1 Dev, etc...

I do what I can to prevent you from having to order one single part from Mouser, but hunting down and sorting germaniums isn't my thing.

With a few exceptions I don't really attempt to keep out of production parts... It's not that I'm against doing it, it's just difficult to find the time for that sort of thing while continuing to trace several pedals a week. :ROFLMAO:

I could get some BBDs... I planned to do that before the pandemic hit, then they were in short supply so I sort of forgot about it.

Honestly, I have always steered clear of the BBD stuff, but if I were able to pick one up and the board at the same time it would make me far more likely to take a swing at one of the projects.
I swear @Cabintech and I have no affiliation lol but I keep singing their praises. No minimum order, reasonable shipping. I used bbd stuff from them and my Caesar fired up perfectly on the first try. That said, you prbly are well-served to buy double of any bbd chips just because even legit chips can be a little funky from time to time. My $0.02.

I do appreciate the tip (even if it is only 2 cents worth of tip) and will keep it in mind. They just seem expensive and I question if the juice is worth the squeeze. I honestly like the single pt2399 stuff just as much from demos I have heard. But maybe playing a BBD circuit will give me a completely different opinion.
