Funny. In what I guess was a marketing ploy to have more transistors than the last radio, often transistors were employed as diodes but still counted as transistors.

A bunch more Toshiba jobbies like the last one. This one still works(kinda, all stations are jumbled at the end of the dial) and has the full box and manual so I'll wait to see how the Toshibas work out before hacking at this one up

What were the hfe and leakage like from your last one?

Christmas came a bit early. Very effectively doubles my usable workspace. And the storage is a monstrous plus. Now begins the transfer and re-org.

Always a good day.
A little white lithium on the sliders will help in the long run. Don't forget to put a very lite coating of oil on the drawers to avoid rust, if your going to be tossing metallic tools in there...

I got it apart and started trying to desolder but man, 60yo solder is some tough stuff. Tossed it on the bench and will circle back.
The radio I salvaged recently I did all with solder braid. I got a bunch of this old non-fluxed braid recently, but it works awesome if you put some flux on it. Bought that flux pen when I first started building pedals - never used it on a pedal, but it worked great on the braid.

Will get myself some white lithium then, thanks for the tip. Is the oil to go in the bottom of the drawers? or on the face of them? They came with drawer liners so hopefully that holds up okay. but I guess if I am practicing my fastball with my tools then nothing can hold up.

It'd be cool if you Raiders-of-the-Lost-Art-of-Radio found equivalent modern transistors and after culling the Ge for your pedals, made the radios operational again with modern Si trans.
Vintage radio restorers are cringing... (I have a friend who's into them ol' airwave-units)

Just like Hammond organs (not B3s, too valuable, but other lesser Hammonds and brands) getting raped of their guts for amps.
I've got nothing against any of it, just would be cool if stuff was made to work again.

Salvaging the transistors without disturbing any of the other components would have been a wild amount of work. I agree those old radios are cool though! I don’t know if I could have gone through with it if the radio was operational. Luckily mine had already been messed up pretty good by somebody else and was destined for the trash heap.

FWIW I'm not sure if it's necessary for you, and I don't have any braid myself, but an interesting tip I picked up from a video was to use small pieces of the braid if you're having issues with the tip of the roll, because then the heat won't escape through the whole braid, but you can just heat that small part completely.

So far none of the radios I've bought have been working. I've been thinking about trying to put a dab radio and Bluetooth into one for MrsOctPuss.
