What's on the workbench?

fair few transistors and diodes in that!

Looks like some sort of discrete flip-flop / FET switching.

I just realized that:

1) I didn't even bother to plug this pedal in to see if it works before gutting it
2) I have nothing to test this pedal with

Now I'm going to have to buy an acoustic, and some sort of XLR equipped device to plug it into....

@Robert-

A) I assume you just reach into an Event Horizon portal to grab whatever instrument you happen to need at the moment. Does it have a passive pickup in it?

B) thank you for the new profile pic. I call him Lego Pharoah.

C) you'll be happy to know that many of my mandolin parts barely present as such - here's a spot I did on a Dream Pop album, for instance. Not sure anyone would guess there's electric mandolin on it. https://clocktowermusic.bandcamp.com/track/it-happens

I just found it in the closet, I have no idea. Since that's what I need, I'm going to say probably not.

I'm just joking around about the mandolin thing, I can't even place hearing one aside from Losing My Religion....
I'm pretty ambivalent about REM generally, but I've heard that song enough for a lifetime.

If the Ovation has a battery-powered preamp it probably won't tell ya a whole lot about the Red-Eye... still, it's somethin!

Some mandolin tracks…

  • Ween- Ocean Man
  • Led Zeppelin- Battle of Evermore
  • The Band- Rocking Chair
  • The Beach Boys- Disney Girls
  • R.E.M.- Man on the Moon
  • Elton John- Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters
  • The Kinks- Supersonic Rocket Ship
  • Paul McCartney- Dance Tonight
  • The Band- Rag Mama Rag
  • Grateful Dead- Friend of the Devil

About 75% of this circuit is MOSFET switching for the Boost and battery check circuit.

How important is battery operation?

Would there be any point in an FX Loop bypass footswitch?

I'm not much of a dead head but I've always liked playing Friend of the Devil. It's a good one.

Battery operation is probably good to have for people using it on a belt pack sort of thing. While a battery check feature sounds nice, I don’t think it’s essential.

A standard 1/4” unbalanced output would be nice to have in addition to the balanced XLR out.

FX loop bypass could definitely be really beneficial.
