Y'all only use tantalums 'cause they look good on a board.

A TEN POUND chocolate bar. I've been baking since I was a child and have been buying 10 pound guittard bars since the 70's when they were available at Trader Joe's (no longer available there).

It chops up fairly easily and is vastly cheaper than buying chocolate chips. Better too. BTW, white "chocolate" chips contain no chocolate. It's palm kernel oil. So I buy the guittard white chocolate.
I also chop my own chocolate when I bake with it because the only slavery free chips I have found locally are both terrible and expensive.

These guys have the lowest price I've been able to find. They're a small shop that also has a store front. It's getting too close to summer to order, I always wait till it gets cold because I like to eat it as well as bake. If only baking then melted chocolate doesn't matter.

I am telling you, the smell and taste of the signature is incredible. I've tried all the other flavors, they pale in comparison. Available in 2 pound chunks off the 10 pound bar as well.

Yeah I don't think tants look particularly good. If I use them it's purely to save space. But I didn't know how the tantalum came to be. I'm not sure how I feel about that. I'm sitting here in Levis made in Bangladesh, probably in one of the factories which is so badly built it will fall down soon, filled with under-paid workers and children. It's very difficult to be a guilt free consumer these days.

In a global economy, every dollar you spend ends up in an a**hole's hand eventually. We can pick and choose battles, but cant defund the whole machine and still participate in modern society.
I use tants very minimally and doubt my average annual use makes near the use impact of one hour of one in Samsung (or other electronics company) production line.
Maybe I'm just getting jaded as I get older but I'm picking my battles here at home, focusing on denying my cash to companies that continue to contribute for the degradation of worker's and women's rights.
Now, if I were running production and plowing through inventory, it would be a different story.
Now, this did influence me to look into Kemet, who produce an annual report on their use of conflict minerals. Found this one from 2022.
It does appear they are marking components as "DRC Conflict Free" where applicable and that for that reporting period, they believe their tantalums were conflict free. I'm not certain how this pertains to tants sold outside of the US as they're only reporting for the US as required by IS law.

There's no fighting injustice in the world market. The underground market will find its way to get the money they want from it. They'll find their way, and at some point, there's no way of truly knowing what you're getting.... "Rwanda is a country that exports more than it mines."

White chocolate is supposed to be from the cocoa butter extracted from the beans, but I suppose many on the market substitute other oils instead.

Yes it is! Imagine my surprise when reading the ingredients in the store? I had run out of Guittard white chocolate, it was 111f in the shade in my backyard and I didn't want to order a 10 pound bar. I read this and just about puked wondering how many people were feeding this BS to their families thinking it was chocolate, which is GOOD for you.

And this is Guittard High Sierra (white chocolate) ingredients. Cocoa butter instead of palm kernel, sunflower lecithin instead of soy. Top quality. This goes for $110 at most places, $68 at Bakers c&c!!!!!

Well this is a ten year old article, power seems to change hands every 30 months or so in the region. Also hard to say if even a new source of the required materials could exist by now...... I'm not exactly well versed in mining logistics.

fwiw I have never used one. But from the article I read a few days ago, everyone on the planet has unknowingly bought products from China produced by slave labor.

Dear gawd.....
I've been buying them knowingly and so have most of us. It's not recent news that all of our products are built in China in less than favorable conditions. Smartphones, computers and a ton of stuff we have no control over unless we just up and go live off the grid.

I'm not trying to deflect blame but we elect governments so we don't have to think about this stuff. We can't all be full-time activists. I think not buying certain things, like tantalum caps, when alternatives are available ought to be enough. That and being as informed voters as we can.

Hopefully future generations, how many there will be is up for debate, will not judge us by their contemporary standards.

As Carl Sagan said, survival is the exception, extinction is the norm. Humans won't stop pillaging until thee is nothing left to pillage. As long as there is a buck to be made, to hell with anyone else.

Now pardon me while I smoke my cigar that was rolled on the thighs of Nicaraguan virgins.

I’ve been buying this brand when I can find it: https://tonyschocolonely.com/us/en/our-mission
They built a network of exploitation free farms and distributors and whatnot. We can’t win all these battles but I feel like I gotta try.
You a fan of Tony's bar structure? The brand originates from my country. I enjoy eating them, once in a while (I tend to enjoy dark and milk and white and hazelnut the most, so store brands is good enough for me), but I remember the taste less than how I have to bite around those angles. :)

Yeah not ideal for sure but eating it makes me feel morally satisfied 😉

I always wonder why I have a compliance training at work every now and then when we do support a Chinese company that set up the surveillance equipment for the minority camps in China. Or why we rely on Indian companies when India wants to set religious criteria for citizenship.
I guess the few tantalum that we as a diy community are using are the least problem to overcome.

I suppose some people might use tantalum to fund the violence and instability of armed militias.

I kind of shied away from buying them when I heard that (but I have some and I use them from time to time, just to get rid of the ones I have).
Had no idea about all this. Thanks for the education, @spi
