What's in the mailbox? 📬 📦

Got a couple boxes today. Oh man this amp is really good. I’ve only ever drove a seriously fast car a few times in my life but that feeling of pent up power at your foot and release when you punch it…. Well this amp has that feeling at low volumes and explodes as you turn it. Going to be fun exploring it.

I'm sure it's fantastic but don't you wish they added a socket so you could stick the components in? So much faster than clipping the leads. Are the clips removable?
1) Clip (i.e., attach, don’t cut!) the probes to breadboard jumper wires. 2) Plug the jumpers into a breadboard. 3) Plug yr stuff into the breadboard. 4) Press the button.

You could also make a vero rig with a ZIF socket.

Sockets wear out, this gives you some options to work with your particular setup.

Seriously… I was playing with it last night and the clips are annoying… I guess I’m going to set up a dedicated breadboard for it so I can just pop some In There… I have about 50 germaniums i breadboarded to record HFE and leakage back in January.. rechecked a bunch of them against what I recorded and the numbers are vastly different… Now I don’t know which ones to trust… The DCA is showing they have much more gain… some I had showing 72 HFE are showing g in the DCA they are 117 HFE

Stage all the transistors in the breadboard, then wait a bit. Use jumpers attached to the clips and move them from transistor to transistor. That way you can test them all quickly, but give sufficient time between handling them and testing.

New Pickup(s) Day!!

Woohooo!

Just got a large order in from Jose at Planettone.com

I've been so extremely happy with this new (to me) pickup source. Fantastic sounding pickups at a ridiculously reasonable price.

About the only thing I don't like about them is the P90 covers he uses are "import" spec with sharper radius on all corners and look kinda cheap to me. But the pole spacing fits any Gibson spec Butyrate aftermarket P90 covers.

First up a set of P90's for my SG Special. This is his Elite Pro A2 neck, like the one I currently have in my Tokai Goldtop P90.
For the bridge I chose something a bit hotter. It's his 1956 overwound bridge with A5 magnet. Wound to ~10.5k.

Next is a set of his 1959 Special PAF humbuckers for my new Tokai burst Les Paul.
I had him underwind the neck pickup to ~7k and the bridge is a bit overwound PAF at ~9.3k
No wax potting on either.

Then another set of "David Gilmour" tribute pickups. I've mentioned in other posts that the "Pink Tone" Gilmour set I got from Onamac Windery were not overly impressed. I'm hoping these will do the trick. They're the same concept but wound a bit hotter than the Onamac ones. These will be going into my Shoreline Gold Strat. (And hopefully staying:)

And finally another "Mean Mistreater" Mini-hum/Firebird pickup and a 1951 Original Tele bridge. From the specs the Tele bridge is wound pretty hot, like a Broadcaster/Esquire pickup. According to the description some of the super early Tele pickups from Leo were wound this hot. I dunno know about that, but Jose recommended this to be a good match with the Mini-hum neck in a Tele. It's wound to ~9.5k.
This set will be going into a "re-build" of one of my Teles. Stay tuned.

Are the stock pickups in those guitars so bad that you had to immediately replace them?
Asking because I might go for one of those Tokai LPs but I don't have the budget for new pickups

If you're in Europe, you can generally find FGN cheaper than Tokai. Same quality.
