What is your favorite "Big Muff" circuit, and why?

Hizumitas or the Triangle 72 #2 (with NPNs instead of PNPs) from the Kit Rae schematics page, they're both very similar. It's huge and thick enough that you can crank the tone control without being shrill, but the tone control is somehow still usable in the lower range too. Finagling a mids control would probably make it perfect to me, but they're so good as is I never bothered to tweak them further.

Mine has always been the op-amp variant- it's huge, heavy, and it grinds. It's also a nice counter and stack-mate for my go-to Rats. It honestly kinda baffled me when EHX dropped the Metal Muff and it turned out to be a tweaked MT-2 instead of an expanded Op-Amp muff

For the transistor versions, I like the Violet Rams Head specs. It's still thick and grinding, but offers up a decent amount of clarity for chords

To me, the sound of the Human Gear Animato really catched my ear. I didn't even know at first that it was a Muff based circuit. I plan on building the russian, violet ram's head and opamp versions soon. Surely the mayonnaise catched my attention too, looks like I'll have to build that one too.

As a bassist (sans question mark) my sentimental pick is the green. The pedal I've used more than any other.

On my board right now is the effects layouts widowgast (dunwich wizard). I can't really call it a favorite because i have a constantly rotating pile of muffs. I've been going on and on about my undying love for the moonn lofran for a long time but I recently decided I want more control over the lows so it got the boot.

I don’t have a ton of experience with them since I’m honestly not super into them, but the Foxey Lady is my pick just for the Fripp association. I also really dig anything without clipping diodes and with a flat mids tone stack

It's downright spooky that @Robert started this thread today, as I was just looking through my pile and found the Big Muff board I got from Fuzzdog when I first started building (before I found my way here, alas). I've never played a Big Muff and don't know which version to build. His build doc has schematics/BOM's for all these versions:
  • 70's (3rd) version
  • Green Russian
  • Black Russian
  • Civil War Russian
  • Tall Font Green Russian
  • Ram's Head
  • Triangle
  • Violet Ram's Head
  • V3 79#2 (Mascis)
  • Creamy Dreamer
  • Stoned cleric
  • Elk Sustainer (NPN)
So, I've got the popcorn out here. Looking forward to seeing what every likes because I have no idea which one to go with.

My personal theory is that Fripp’s FL is a 72, either #1 or 2. I lean towards the first one…

Honestly, my favourite Muff is:

the one I haven't built yet.

I've got a bunch of tweaks and blends of various Muffs I want to try. I should build a few stock ones, too, though.

Being a bass-player, I favour the circuits that are good on bass.

Also, the Gnomeratron is pretty versatile, much like the Muffin Factory.

For my Muffin Factory build, I will try to combine all the things I find I like from my other Muff Builds. So, there's still a long way to go.

You should build a PPCB muffin factory/sushi box lab rat/ Aionfx ring stinger all in the same enclosure. All the best pcb suppliers in one very big enclosure
