Angine de Poitrine

I do like the music, but it feels way overhyped. Like when Bart said “I didn’t do it.” There are some bands that do the theatrical costume thing and are immense musicians, like Imperial Triumphant, Thantifaxath, Portal… it comes off as a crutch here.

It’s like if there was a spin off of the 90s era of Skin Graft Records for toddlers.

I got deep into non 12-tet and JI composition towards the end of college. I had my music performed at a number of universities, conferences and competitions. I hear and appreciate what they’re doing. It’s juvenile, but fun. It does groove.

I would expect to catch a band like this on a Wednesday night in a crowd of 50 people.

Never listened to them, refused to click through based on the hype… black and white polka-dots seemed all too pretentious and contrived.

However, I saw they’re Quebecois, and somebody said it made them want to listen to Gang Of Four… so after waiting for my takeaway food order, I’ll go home and give it a listen for those reasons AND the band annoyed Rick Beato to the point he made a video about it (which I refuse to watch)…

I’ll read the rest of the thread while I listen.

Where the hell is my food order?!

More importantly what did you get??

Just because something can be done does not mean that it should be done.
I say this all the time! My version is "Just because you can doesn't mean you should".

Having said that I don't mind what I have seen of Angine de Poitrine. It doesn't make me want to rush out and see them but I don't dislike it either. I agree with @comradehoser - Music is definitely NOT having a moment right now. It seems that the simpler, more repetitive, mechanical and child-like you can make a tune (no harmonies please) the better it is in pop music at the moment.

Angine de Poitrine reminds me of Split Enz meets Daft Punk meets my math teacher.

I'm into them. They're not necessarily a style of music I'd put on all the time but I find myself grooving to them whenever I do listen to them, so rather than overthink it I go with that as my base reaction.

I do think they're a little gimmicky, but also it's hard to NOT be gimmicky if your band comes with lore attached (also see HENGE for a case study in that). For me at least I'd rather have my gimmicky music be instrumental so that way I don't have to listen to the frontman sing about being beamed down from the mothership on each album.

I tried to get tickets for their Portland show and it sold out about 1 minute into me being in the online waiting room. I'll be curious to see if the momentum and hype stays that high as the novelty wears off a bit.
