I don't know that I think one is better than the other. I use them equally as much but neither is essential to me. If I can only pick one, I'd probably pick reverb
Kind of the same and not. I also use both equally but do find them essential, playing with synths and doing a lot of ambient stuff. And to differ, I'd pick delay ;).

Delay can approximate reverb, but reverb can’t cop delay sounds. I think I prefer reverb (though I love both, so hard to say), but if I could only have one or the other, it would have to be delay just for the fact that delay covers everything from Frippertronics, to rockabilly slapback, to dotted eight cliches, to Echorec-style pseudo-reverb washes.

I use delay more so I voted for it but I don't think it's better. I love reverb as well. Delay has the edge because I can approximate a reverb with a delay but cannot go the other way.
That's my take on it too. I can create a faux reverb effect with a delay pedal so if I could only have 1 then it's delay.

I prefer reverb, because it's always on for me. I can live without a delay. I know I can get faux-reverb with a delay but then it's a compromise.

I don’t use reverb. I do use delay (well, it’s simulated tape echo…close enough?…). Reverb is great for somethings, but it’s not as flexible as delay…

Digital reverb is just complicated delay algorithms, so i have to pitch my vote up the ladder. I find a simple slapback to be more usable than a reverb tank, mostly because im kind of sick of the reverb drenched garage rock sound from a fender tank, and there’s precious few reverb pedals that I truly enjoy and even less that fits my usual sound. I think a slapback is a pedalboard necessity, and the DL4 covers a lot of bases when its dialed in right, not that the delay sounds particularly ‘good’. I think if i played a different style id feel differently though!

I said delay, because I don't typically like reverb pedals. Reverb is awesome and I use it way more than delay, but on an amp, with a decent sized reverb tank, just like it should be.

So to sum up Reverb Tank > Delay > Reverb Pedal

I do very much enjoy delay as well though.

I'm a multi instrumentalist who's mostly focused on bass. I have no love for reverb on bass but consider it essential with guitar, rhodes, synth, everything else really. I used to own a 74 twin reverb and there's just something about that old time spring reverb so guess I'm also in the "non pedal verb" camp. Delay wins for being on all the boards. Especially now that I'm using the hydra.

Delay as an effect because for me reverb is sort of a always on, part of the amp in most cases. Outside of drippy springs or the walrus SLO for ambient reverb can’t compete with the many different options you can get with delays. About to finish the darkrift this weekend. Looking forward to yet another delay on my board.

I’m a big fan of both, different tools for different jobs. But Since you are forcing me into a corner I have to pick delay. To me it’s more versatile and chances are the engineer or sound guy is going to use reverb in the mix wether you like it or not anyway...🤣

I like a little reverb, I also like a little delay, I usually have two delays on my board one for just a little something extra and the other for slapback, but I play mostly rhythm so I use chorus also. Never really bonded with Flangers or Phasers
