Jlcpcb and tariffs

Speaking of here we are, holy shit, I just got a notice that my package from Tayda that wasn’t even handed off to their local UPS until about 11 AM Eastern this morning has already cleared customs in the US by 7:30 PM eastern. I didn’t think even Superman could make it from Thailand to the US in eight hours.
The package doesn't need to be physically with customs to be cleared. They can clear it as soon as they receive the electronic shipping documents from the sender.

Well, thank you for educating me on that – I never knew it. Looking at the tracking, you’re right that it doesn’t look like it has been logged in yet physically anywhere in the US. Yet they are still claiming it will arrive here in Atlanta tomorrow, Although that just seems kind of doubtful to me.

I only use three vendors for parts since transistioning to SMD:

JLCPCB
TAYDA
Mouser

I have not placed a large order since early March so I’m unsure how I’ll be impacted.

I will say that I could absorb the percentages I’ve seen floating around and not eat to deep into my upward swing in pricing.

I’ve been basically giving pedals away as it is!

The status of my Tayda order as per UPS says:

“The package is at the clearing agency awaiting final release.”

Does this mean it is getting analyzed for a tariff? …or is that just a normal part of shipment tracking that I haven’t noticed before?

Edit… It shows “On the way” now but is still overseas.

Edit… Okay, now I see this message. “UPS is missing information needed the clear this shipment.” Is this normal and is there something I need to do does Tayda automatically correspond with UPS since they are the shipper?

Do you anticipate continuing to order from outside the US or look for alternatives?

Oof that sounds annoying. I don’t think this is part of the normal shipment tracking, I have never seen it before. I would contact Tayda about clearing the shipment before it gets sent back.

I received an email from UPS and was able to log in and provide more details and explain the intended use via their online form. Upon submitting the info the warning went away on the UPS tracking page. Hopefully that means it is on its way again and won’t get stuck.

My Tayda package was just returned to Bangkok - "The shipment has been returned per shipper's or consignee's instructions or according to our standard procedure", whatever THAT means. Crap, this whole situation smells like it could be a real big mess...
Ugh. I hope the delay isn’t too long for you.
Today I had to fill out a form giving more details as to what the product is and its intended use before it could be released for shipment from the clearing agency. Did you have to do anything like that?

I didn’t quite know what to add. The invoice they already had from Tayda already showed everything I’d think they’d need. I just explained that painted enclosures are used for guitar effects pedals, and gave them the dimensions of a 125b. I also uploaded my Tayda invoice to show it matches theirs, which it does.

Was it returned to Bangkok from China or from the US?

What carrier were you using, if you wouldn't mind telling?
DHL, package is still w/ Tayda in Bangkok. The package and paperwork were given to DHL, who took the package to the airport, and then it was returned to Tayda. Sounds like some additional tariff paperwork was required. Right now, I notice that the Tayda website is offline, I wonder if / suspect they are adding info on tariffs & shipping.

That this White House action was taken with basically zero time for planning/preparation is incredibly stupid and damaging economically. I'm not talking about only me, but everyone worldwide including all businesses - imagine if your company's product shipment was at sea when this all happened and now new paperwork is required... Do ships have to return to port and unload everything, all the shipping containers, reassess their contents and fill out new docs and then ship again? Imagine the chaos at ports that now ensuing because this all happens on short notice. And also imagine that this will again change in the near future as you-know-who changes his mind and/or strikes new "deals" on short notice. Basically every international shipment to the US from now until weeks/months from now are in the midst of total chaos. Argh, what an idiot we have in change...

I scrambled together a Tayda order on Friday afternoon hoping to get it through before the big tariff bump going into effect this week. Even went with bare enclosures to avoid the powdercoating delay.

Shipped on Saturday via FedEx. It spent some time in Memphis TN in "International shipment release - Import" which I don't remember seeing on previous shipments, but it left there without any request for additional payment on my part.

Now in New Hampshire and scheduled to arrive at my place today.

It makes me wonder if some get passed along and some don’t… like if they avoid bottleneck chaos situations by selecting ones to check.

Skimming over this thread (we're now approaching 100 posts) I'm wondering if anyone has actually gotten slapped with these new charges other than Robert. I've got a Tayda order I'm looking to pull the trigger on (~$50 with shipping) and am wondering if I should look elsewhere.

If I understand the news right, the big tariff announcement from last week (+34% on goods from China, and a new 37% for Thailand) doesn't go into effect until Wednesday this week. I think the charges Robert paid were existing tariffs on China that stopped being exempted under $800.

The Tayda site is still down right now too, so who knows what's up with that.

Well I’ve spent the past few months putting together UV files to order from Tayda all at once for after I was done with my final semester. Guessing it would be a bad time now to order 15-20 UV printed enclosures since even if placed today they’d be shipped after may 2nd so I’d be f***ed. Right?
Am I understanding correctly? If that’s the case I’ll have to hold off on building anymore until the turd is flushed or the economy crashes hard enough for him to backtrack everything.

My guess is the site could be down for maintenance to add a tariff disclosures page, and links to it on sundry pages on the site.

Or maybe things are just chaotic enough to shut it all down for a while. Maybe there's time to catch up on UV orders, etc.. And possibly use that as an excuse to launch revamp the eComm UX? One can hope :)
