Let's See Your Amps

Great idea. I use my own design that combines a parallel triode preamp, LTP phase inverter and a 5E3 tweed style 6V6 output stage. I get a great cranked JTM stack tone at neighbor friendly volumes.

Here's my current rig after moving into my condo. To keep it at bedroom volumes but still pack a good thump, I've ended up with a whacky but effective solution. Amp speaker out > Suhr IR Reactive Load line out > 5 watt SE amp (I also designed) set for very clean to drive the 2x12 closed back speaker cab at practice levels. All pedals are before the amp. I'll include a link to an old You Tube demo I posted years ago when I use to frequent amp builder forums.

Phat Ass demo clip:

Hi Scott! Great to see your amp here, I found the sschematic of your Phat 16 awhile back on the Weber forum I believe and used it to build this one here which has the addition of switchable fx loop and an inbuilt solid state reverb circuit added. The phat cap is a non polarised oil filled filter cap.
Thanks for the inspiration and I dig that amp, thabks for sharing your design!

Hey cooder that's awesome! I'm really glad to hear I was able to help inspire another inspiration! I love what you did with that head cabinet!

Scott :)

You sir, have excellent taste!

Do you all allow bass players in here?

There are some gorgeous amps in here, and I am amazed by the craftsmanship many of you show. Many of these are true works of art!

Looks like y'all like tubes, so I think you'll dig my M/B 400+, even if it wasn't home built!

Hard to see, but that's TWELVE 6L6'S and four 12AX7's! Some people call it one of the greatest bass amps to have ever been made, but I just call it the back breaker.

Recently switched over to the Synergy stuff. Fryette designed 100 watt (single rack unit!) tube power amp, and modular tube preamps. Right now the preamps I have range from low gain (Fender Tweed/Deluxe), to high gain (Friedman HBE), to monstrous (Bogner Uberschall, Engl Savage, Diezel VH4). Absolutely loving this because I get bored of sounds quickly, and this gives me a chance to swap things out with actual company-designed preamps that sound fantastic and give me the feeling of a new or different amp.

I moved everything over on the wall in the office in back of me, i turn on and play what ever rig im in the mood for

A friend passed and left me more pedals and gear than ill ever need so i bought a Pedaltrain Classic Pro , for a Deal i couldn't pass up a Rocktron loop pedal switcher, and a ton of $$ in George L's cable and jacks, and made the pedal board....27 hours to wire up...and it worked perfect ! No shorts or Hum....

I really like this rolling stool for rewiring my rack...perfect height

2010 Phaez HRM/BF 10W...i keep that over to the side of me next to my desk ...Avatar cab with Scumbacks..thing has some nice tube tone...all old stock Amprex/Mullards/RFT/and old black plate 12ax7....he left me like 3 back up tube sets for this amp

On my Desk i have my FM3 with Adam7's and a Adam8 sub....i keep it updated but never hardly play it

I like Knobs and tubes and pedals i guess

Ha ha ha ha ha, would it matter?

Tubes aren't heavy, but all that power requires a shit-ton of copper & iron. I imagine the 4 x 15" speaker cabs to go with ain't light either!

This was passed down to me from my grandfather a few months ago. 56-57 Gibson ga-5. As far as I understand this amp was basically just cloning fenders little 1 knob champ. Looks like most is original aside from the filter cap. I replaced the power amp tube with one that had been sitting in an unopened box inside the amp, probably from decades ago.

I mostly play through my iridium into my mixer/interface, but definitely turn this bad boy every once in a while because it sounds beautiful. Starts getting edge of break-up around 3 which is plenty loud for my office studio haha.

According to The Googles my SWR Goliath III 4x10 is 89lbs. It's close to 20 years old, so that makes sense. It also says my 400+ is 70lbs! A new Bergantino 4x10 is 49lbs and and Aguilar Tonehammer 700 is 5lbs. 159lbs vs. 54lbs. What a difference a couple of decades make!

The Aguilar is class D so it's not surprising that it's small & light weight.

Speaker cab weight depends mainly on the wood and the magnets. Thinner panels, smaller magnets = lower weight.

Weight is why I am such a fan of 1x12 combos these days. :-) I used to think I needed at least 2x12 or 4x10 but I really don't. I depends a lot on the design of the amp, the way the cab is built, etc. I find the little tweed style cabs made of solid pine with thin baffles and back pates can fill a stage with sound. I built a 5E3 Deluxe for a friend who played in a band with another guitarist who used a quad box and he complained that he couldn't get the Deluxe volume low enough. Quad boxes are so much more directional but a tweed cab spills sound everywhere.

So my 1x12 tweed Super running KT77 output tubes is as much as I'll ever need.

Here's a Fender DRRI I gutted and rebuilt recently. It's so much quieter than stock now - a lot of the inherent hiss and hum from the PCB amp has gone. Since I took this pic I have modded it to run EL34s so the grid stoppers are bigger now. It has a much bigger PT than stock to handle the extra current needs and also has a Vibroverb OT to suit the impedance of big bottles better. Also the tremolo is bias trem now - much throbbier.

And here's the latest Marshall 50W build. My favourite amps to build.

A friend of mine who used to play in the 80's hair bands , been on MTV stored his Bass rigs here at the warehouse ...That Bass 400 plus in a 12 spaced rack with other units was the heaviest thing ive ever lifted...gheez ...but i like all the tubes tho ! LOL

He takes his Bass and a Sansamp pedal in a gig bag to gigs now....

If I ever get to gigging again I will probably pick up a lightweight class D amp. Don't think I'll ever get rid of the 400+ but I don't really want to drag it around to bar gigs either. Not to mention it's in need of a re-tube and I'm not looking forward to making that purchase!

Oh i bet ..whew $$$

I bought my Power Tubes in sets of 8 matched....2 years ago..today hummm ? $$

But yea...keep it for sure, things are not made like they used to be...Mesa"s stuff is top notch !

Ill never get rid of my 2:90 , just had it re Tubed and re capped,....its solid and sounds awesome !
