Like A Brand New Guitar…

I never thought I’d ever own a Les Paul. They were always well beyond my budget. One day a few years ago, my wife told me that was dumb. A month later I scored a deal $350 on an open box Epiphone Les Paul Standard, through Sam Ash. Seems the guy who bought it (Daryl) thought he ordered the plus top. Anywho, it’s the best feeling/playing guitar I’ve ever owned. Sound-wise…we’ll, I always fought with it.

About a month ago, I decided to finally make some changes. My long term plan: new pickup, JP wiring (even though he never really had it), and a fake Bigsby. I’m the meantime, I wanted to experiment a bit. Experiment #1: I removed the pickup covers. I ended up using a single-edge razor blade, rocked back and forth to cut through the solder holding the cover on. I then used an old soldering iron and a paper towel to melt the wax from the pickup (well, most of it). There was a definite difference. The neck pickup now has a bit more clarity and brightness, while the bridge pickup is a bit smoother, and less sterile. This was a successful experiment. Funnily enough, while I expected the bobbins to be black, they turned out of be black and dark grey.

Experiment #2: last week I decided to go install 50’s-style wiring. It was an easy mod…just move one wire…or so I though. Two new caps and about 6 inches of wire (ground loop) later, and it was up and running. A major success. The guitar sounds like a different guitar…or rather, what a LP should sound like.

So what is the moral/point of this story? Not much. I’m surprised at the difference. I’m not really considering new pickups anymore…I’ll still do the JP wiring with new pots and all that. Now, I don’t really go in for that bluesy LP sound. I precise a jazzier, Frippier tone…a tad warm, clear, and smooth. Let this thread serve as a lesson: sometimes small changes matter…

Looks good. I used to have an ‘03 Plus Top back in the day.

I was originally looking for a Plus Top. At that time, however (Summer ‘19), there were no Cherry Bursts available. I tried a few different Epi LP’s at a Guitar Center, and wasn’t a fan of the Plus Top (I don’t remember the color. It definitely wasn’t CB). It sounded a bit too thin to my ears. I was really impressed by an Ebony Standard I tried. The actual guitar had guitar acne, but it sold me on the Standard.

I called around, and ended up filing a request with SamAsh. A few days later I got a call that a warehouse of Florida (ew) had an open box. I got it discounted, and it showed up at my local SamAsh (an hour away) a week later. We opened it in the store, and the original packing slip was still in it. The guitar hadn’t been touched. The wrenches/freebies were missing, though…

I have a Plus Top Pro in Honeyburst, I really like it, but with four PRS in the house and a Studio Firebird with P90's it doesn't get much love

Epiphones are amazing value if you don't care for the headstock "mojo". Love the look of yours, the strap is rocking as well!

I was looking at them when I saw a good deal on an FGN LS10 (Fujigen factory, they don't resell well like a Gibson, but if you buy them used then you get awesome deals). It's the only guitar I haven't had to tinker with (yet).

I have long wondered about those Fujigen Les Pauls. They look great and have some nice features. I've never seen one in the flesh but have played a few Fujigen built instruments and they know how to make a guitar. I see them used on Ishibashi's "U-Box" from time to time and have been tempted...

If you can find one second hand then I say go for it. People don't pick them up for some reason (a bit like Godin, great instrument but bad resell value).

Mine is a 2011, flame maple veneer, full maple cap, solid mahogany body. Alnico 8 pickups are hot but tame themselves nicely with volume and tone. You can get full flame tops for extra, or no flame for less. Sound wise they'd be the same.

Here in Germany, there are decent examples around between €750-950 second-hand. Then you have a LP standard killer for a LP tribute price!
