CONTEST Ten Pedals or Less

CONTEST
This is a fairly common MOSFET based polarity protection scheme.

All of the Thorpy pedals (among others) use it and it seems like some of the Madbean projects used it a few years ago.

Spaceman and a few others seem to prefer MOSFET protection. It's a more elegant scheme and avoids the voltage drop, but at what cost?! I would imagine it's much more common in low-voltage digital design.

@PedalPCB how common is a full-bridge rectifier in pedals?

It seems like there was a forum post years ago discussing the voltage drop with MOSFET protection... if I recall the difference ended up not being great enough to justify the added components (compared to a series schottky).

I don't recall seeing a full-wave bridge used in any commercial pedal designs aside from a schematic posted by @vigilante398 (and some AC powered units).

There are some considerations (isolation) that have to be made regarding grounding / daisy chaining effects, otherwise it would be the ideal solution since you could use virtually any power supply that is within an acceptable voltage range (AC or either polarity DC).

You could use a relay for simple polarity protection with virtually no voltage drop, although it'd sink a lot of idle current.
Crude as hell but it'd work.

Ten pedals or less... You mean, ones that work? Commercial-built or otherwise, I ... Yes, I'm still a noob.

42, with the diodes each on individual little towels.

Why has no one said 42 yet...? There. 42

I even brought towels... 🤷‍♂️

😸

While I still consider myself a noob, and actually qualify as such for the contest, I figured the contest was for other noobs with even less theoretical experience who haven't dragged out their incompleted builds across years of lethargy.

Thanks for the contest @fig and congrats to the winner, @EGRENIER !

Do I hear a design challenge in the making?

You know, what's shocked me the most here is how many of y'all have built less than 10. Did you not hear Fig say "now go build something!" I've done 10 from parasit alone. Shit.... it's me isn't it? I'M the one with a problem.
Design challenge to use 42 diodes? I can easily do that just with a pair of 1p12t switches for big muff clipping configs 😉

Whoohooo, I won !

My backlog was already at 7 pedals, looks like it will grow more ! How many pedals does one need to have in his backlog to no longer be considered a noobie ?
Congrats on the win.

That's a great question, for which I would like answer as well.

Have you actually completed the GK preamp/power section related pedals where I keep finding your years old thread contributions. Asking for "a friend"... who is me.

To field the question when is one no longer considered a noob, you have to answer for yourself. ”10 pedals or less” was a reference to an express checkout lane with a slight misdirection. The idea was to invoke discussion and perspective. There are no “wrong” answers, as varying experience levels equates to varying exposure. Everyone may have a different take on what is “common”. I’m Tim. I’m a noob. :)

I haven't accomplished JACK. especially years-old fantasy builds I'd forgotten about. Nonetheless, that pushes the GK project back up the queue a bit, so thanks for that nudge.

Just this year alone I've got 5 Muff pedals started and unable to finish thus far because I'm lacking parts or some other hold-up. The latest one requires a 1P12T rotary which I thought I had and all the other parts, I've got 5 rotaries that are all for offboard wiring but the PCB requires pin-mount and to keep the size of the pedal down I'll be ordering a 1P12T #$%^&*-PINNED rotary ...

On top of that I've got a Valve Stem build whose enclosure committed Seppuku on a step-bit. I used the wrecked enclosure as template for punching up a new enclosure, but should've carefully measured the holes indivdually like the first one 'cause nothing's lining up nicely...

Resurrected a car, visited an ailing uncle...

Excuses. I've got nearly as many of those as I do PCBs, but all legit (both the excuses and [most of] the PCBs).

Life does have a way of changing plans. At least life and a few parts are between you and built pedals. I still need to trudge through the "initial stock-up" which I keep putting off to plan the other pedal PCBs I keep buying. I haven't even hit the "started, but not yet finished" stage. So, you got me beat. But at least I am gaining knowledge reading this here forum, which feels like what is supposed to be happening.

I got the talkbass GK Rails pedal PCB from Deadbug FX in hand and the Growling Krizzly kit from Schalltechnik04 coming via DasMusikding. We'll see how those go.

Damn it, I am putting in a parts order this weekend.
