Finally found a big ol slab of mahogany for my baritone tele build

Very nice hunk of wood.... That's actually Sapele but commonly sold as African Mahogany.. Sort of the same thing ... actually better because it's not as dense

This is such a cool project! I assume you also used a template for routing the body? Or do you have access to a cnc? I saved a ~100 year old joist from my house that I want to turn into a body blank (I may need to book match it though). It’s not high quality wood but it’s really old and dry so it should be resonant. I’ve never done anything like that but seeing you guys do stuff like this on the forum is really inspiring!

That’s interesting! I know sapele is a very closely related species and the term “mahogany” is pretty broad these days.

Hey that sounds like an interesting project. It would be pretty unique which I guess is the point of diy. To answer your questions l, the template is multiple pieces that have routing templates for the overall body shape, neck pocket, pickup and control cavities and bridge and Jack routing.

No cnc. Just a really nice Festool router by hand. He used a band saw to cut the body really close and then finished with a 2” flush trim bit.

Few more of todays progress.

Saying “nice” in front of “Festool” is superfluous. I’m guessing your dad is having a lot of fun making the body for you!
You’re so right haha. He’s actually really enjoying it. He just sold his business after almost thirty years so he’s enjoying stuff like this now and said it was a major learning experience. Said the next one will be easier…

Pretty much done with the body work. Time to assemble soon. My dad wanted to try doing some gentle contouring so he added a belly and forearm contour. Very minor and hard to see in these pictures but I like it. Finished with Rubio monocoat pure. It’s a nice natural satin look

Now with the neck mounted. Will probably do another coat of Rubio on the body
