That’s interesting! I know sapele is a very closely related species and the term “mahogany” is pretty broad these days.

Hey that sounds like an interesting project. It would be pretty unique which I guess is the point of diy. To answer your questions l, the template is multiple pieces that have routing templates for the overall body shape, neck pocket, pickup and control cavities and bridge and Jack routing.

No cnc. Just a really nice Festool router by hand. He used a band saw to cut the body really close and then finished with a 2” flush trim bit.

Routed control cavity. Little trouble with the bit so had to enlarge it but it gives me tons of room to do what I want control wise.

You’re so right haha. He’s actually really enjoying it. He just sold his business after almost thirty years so he’s enjoying stuff like this now and said it was a major learning experience. Said the next one will be easier…

Pretty much done with the body work. Time to assemble soon. My dad wanted to try doing some gentle contouring so he added a belly and forearm contour. Very minor and hard to see in these pictures but I like it. Finished with Rubio monocoat pure. It’s a nice natural satin look
